Open Rank, Continuing Track Faculty Position

Department of Medical and Molecular Sciences

The University of Delaware, College of Health Sciences (CHS) is excited to invite applications for a full-time, open-rank faculty position in the Department of Medical and Molecular Sciences (MMSC). The position is available beginning in August 2025. The new faculty will be joining the Department and CHS as we continue to expand and build upon our success as a dynamic department offering academic programs in the clinical, biomedical, and pre-health sciences at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Primary responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate student lecture and laboratory courses in the areas of transfusion medicine and hematology.  The candidate will be expected to advise graduate students, pursue scholarly activities, and perform service to the university, department, and professional community. Content knowledge in the biomedical sciences and a demonstrated commitment to using evidence-based teaching methods are required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate must hold at a minimum a master’s degree and ideally have a minimum of 3 years' experience in medical laboratory science, including teaching and professional service. U.S. certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist MLS (ASCP)CM or equivalent is strongly preferred. This position offers a robust and supportive setting for teaching and other scholarly pursuits in an active research department environment. The successful candidate is expected to excel at teaching, engage in scholarship and professional development, and teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students who are broadly diverse regarding race, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation.  Faculty in the Department of Medical and Molecular Sciences are expected to engage in service to the University, the College of Health Sciences, and the Department, as well as outreach to the community, demonstrating a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

GENERAL INFORMATION: The Department of Medical and Molecular Sciences is an evolving leader with respect to education, research, outreach, and practice. We are a nimble department with a proven ability to refocus our curricula to design new academic programs, to recruit and hire faculty, to engage in new scholarships, build new research programs, and conduct outreach that impacts our communities. In recent years, our undergraduate programs have expanded to include majors in Medical Laboratory Science (NAACLS accredited), Applied Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, and two pre-health majors in Medical Diagnostics, one of which uniquely prepares students to enter Physician Assistant programs.  This expansion has not only broadened our academic reach but has also created invaluable opportunities to bridge the gap between laboratory research and clinical application.  Our graduate programming has flourished with the introduction of three new professionally focused master's degree programs in addition to our established Ph.D. program in Medical Sciences. Our unit actively fosters collaboration and forges strategic alliances with academic institutions, industry partners, community organizations, and clinical experts. These initiatives have been instrumental in enhancing diversity, fostering inclusion, promoting access, and enriching experiential learning for our students in STEM. Currently, an impressive 50% of MMSC faculty are engaged in sponsored projects, reflecting our commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and educational innovation. We are deeply committed to advancing scientific knowledge, mentoring the next generation of laboratory scientists, and making a meaningful impact on the field of laboratory medicine and its applications in healthcare.

The College of Health Sciences is a dynamic, innovative academic unit with more than 3,400 undergraduate and graduate students and 131 faculty, who are nationally recognized leaders across multiple disciplines. The College is housed in multiple buildings on the traditional main campus, but also is an anchor tenant of the University’s Science, Technology, and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus. STAR has become an exciting center that combines business, research and education, focused on leading topics in health science, biopharmaceuticals, data science, engineering, finance and other cross-cutting fields of study. In addition to Kinesiology and Applied Physiology (ranked #5 according to the National Academy of Kinesiology), the College has six additional academic units, including Communication Sciences and Disorders, Epidemiology, Health Behavior and Nutrition Sciences, Medical and Molecular Sciences, Physical Therapy (ranked #2 by US News and World Report), and the School of Nursing. With annual research expenditures of approximately $19.5 million, the college currently houses a number of large, interdisciplinary grants with significant funding from the NIH and DoD. The college boasts strong research teams in the areas of neurological disorders, cardiovascular health, and other chronic disease conditions, as well as rehabilitation science and concussion.

One of the oldest institutions of higher education in the United States, the University of Delaware has a rich history of contributing scientific insights and new ideas, fostering enlightenment, transforming lives and changing the world. Today under the leadership of President Dennis Assanis, the University is committed to building on this legacy to meet the complex challenges facing the globe. The University’s foremost priority remains to ensure the success of every student, and this commitment dates back to our roots as a small private academy founded in 1743. From that early school, which educated three signers of the Declaration of Independence, UD has grown into a research-intensive, technologically advanced institution that is at the forefront of innovation in the classroom, in the laboratory and in the community.

Located in scenic Newark, Delaware, within 2 hours of New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., the University is a Land Grant, Sea Grant, Space Grant, and Carnegie Research University (with very high research activity, a designation accorded to fewer than 3% of degree-granting institutions in the U.S.), and with external funding exceeding $200 million. A state-assisted, privately governed institution, the University enrolls approximately 18,600 undergraduates and 4,500 graduate students.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Compensation packages are competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. Faculty at the University have regularly received annual cost-of-living and merit salary increases, and the benefits package is one of the best in the nation. Relocation and start-up funds are available and negotiable.

TO APPLY: Review of applications will begin on a rolling basis and will continue until the position is filled. Nominations and expressions of interest will be held in confidence and references will be contacted only with the candidate’s permission.
