CONTEXT OF THE JOB:  

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at the University of Delaware is nationally recognized for its exceptional educational experiences and for integrating instruction, research, and public engagement. The School of Music (SOM) represents a complex and diverse operation where academic endeavors are closely related to a wide myriad of public engagement initiatives, ranging from public performances to fundraising and development projects, competitive recruitment for talented prospective students, and marketing of public performance events. The School of Music offers nearly 300 concerts, performances, and events throughout the academic year. Under the direction of the Director, CAS Strategic Events, the Events Technology Supervisor, implements, and maintains audiovisual systems for live music performances by students, faculty, ensembles, and guest artists in the UD School of Music’s performance venues. The position is responsible for the assessment, negotiation and coordination of technical needs and requirements for a variety of performance and musical events supported by the School of Music. 

Under limited supervision of the Director of CAS Strategic Events, coordinates, implements, and maintains recording systems for classical, live music performances by students, faculty, ensembles, and guest artists in the School of Music’s performance venues. The position is responsible for the assessment, negotiation and coordination of technical needs and requirements for a variety of performance and musical events supported by the School of Music. Position requires evening and weekend hours. 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Manages the audiovisual technology for all Center for the Arts events, including live and recorded audio systems, live stream systems, projectors/video systems, and lighting systems. 

  • Oversees and manages audio and performance technical operations for all CAS performance venues, including, Loudis Concert Hall, Puglisi Orchestra Hall, Gore Recital Hall, and Thompson Theater.   

  • Plans, installs, operates, and maintains audiovisual equipment in Puglisi Orchestra Hall, Gore Recital Hall, Loudis Recital Hall, Bayard Sharp Hall, and other necessary performance locations on or off campus. 

  • Designs, installs, operates, and maintains audio systems for major events in performance venues.  

  • Records audio and video for nearly 300 events, including student recitals, faculty recitals, ensemble performances, and guest artist recitals. 

  • Oversees live streaming of events. 

  • Provides sound re-enforcement for performances and lectures. 

  • Produces and distributes recordings, with limited edits, to students, faculty, ensembles, and guest artists. 

  • Monitors and adjusts audio levels during live performances. Recruits and retains a student technical crew, including interviewing, hiring, and training for all Center for the Arts performances. 

  • Supervises a team of event technical student crew to execute the setup, operation, and tear down of technology for Center for the Arts events. 

  • Schedules event technicians for nearly 300 events during the academic year 

  • Creates step-by-step guides of operational procedures for all performances for student event technicians to reference during setup, operation, and tear down of performances. 

  • Coordinates with performers and event technical staff about technical requirements for dress rehearsals or recording sessions. 

  • Assesses and meets the needs and requirements including any technical riders to performing groups’ contracts. 

  • Negotiates with School of Music faculty, students, managers and directors to meet performance needs within the capabilities and limitations of event venues. 

  • Coordinates technical overlap with University Media Services when music venues are required for non-School of Music events. 

  • Works with Disability Support Services to plan and implement necessary accessibility accommodations such as hearing assistance systems and event captioning. 

  • Works collaboratively with SOM faculty and large ensemble directors in the planning, implementation, editing, and mastering of ensemble audio recordings for UD SOM performances. 

  • Estimate costs and calculates bills for services and equipment used outside of the School of Music performances. 

  • Maintains the performance event venues in safe and proper operating condition. 

  • Identifies, locates, and oversees contracts for special staffing, staging, or audiovisual equipment rentals from University Media Services or third-party vendors for necessary shows. 

  • Maintains and recommends purchase of necessary hardware and software. 

  • Directs and coordinates the activities of technical crew members during rehearsals and live performances. 

  • Acts as House Manager and Front of House Director if/when required.  

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • High school diploma or GED with vocational/technical training in theater technology and five years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Completion of a USITT certificate training program or degree in theater technology or audio production preferred.  

  • Live performance recording and sound reinforcement experience. 

  • Experience in multi-track audio recording and mixing.  

  • Experience working in an academic or professional venue preferred. 

  • Experience with high-end recording hardware. 

  • Experience with standard recording and post-production software (e.g. ProTools and Logic Pro) 

  • Basic computer literacy in both MacOS and Windows operating systems. 

  • Experience with computing hardware connections and understanding of electronic and audio fundamentals. 

  • Experience with audio, lighting and video system design. 

  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, read floor plans and lighting diagrams. 

  • Ability to solve complex technical problems under time constraints. 

  • Ability to work independently.  

  • Ability to communicate effectively with people having varied levels of technical knowledge.

Special requirements: 

  • Must work evenings, weekends and holidays to support the demands of various events.  

  • Ability to lift audio equipment up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.  

  • Ability to work with ladders, lifts and scaffolding on a semi-regular basis.  

  • Ability to discern accurately color, pitch, tone and volume of sound.
