Context of Job:
Under general supervision performs skilled carpentry work at the journeyman level including tasks such as building/constructing partitions, joists, and studding rafters, wood stairways, window and door frames, and hardwood floors, as well as cutting, fitting, installing, and repairing cabinets and drywall to specifications and standards of the trade. Requires experience in all phases of carpentry, such as finished, rough framing, and construction and knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment to construct, erect, install, maintain, and repair wood structures, fixtures, concrete building forms, and install and repair acoustical ceiling tiles.
 
Major Responsibilities: 
  • Performs rough and finished carpentry;
  • Modifies, repairs, and maintains buildings and building surfaces;
  • Inspects, repairs and/or replaces ceiling tiles;
  • Reads, interprets, and works from blueprints and drawings; creates sketches of items or modifications necessary for jobs;
  • Schedules and coordinates work; provides rough estimates and lays out scope of work;
  • Performs hand and bench work in the Carpenter Shop or at the job site; operates planers, jointers, drill presses, power saws, routers, and other woodworking machinery;
  • Assembles, repairs and/or modifies furniture;
  • Repairs and sharpens hand and machine tools;
  • Assists other structural trade’s personnel in the performance of their duties, e.g. roofing, dry wall repair, window replacement;
  • Uses computer to access e-mail, receive work instructions and other administrative information to include electronic payroll forms;
  • Communicates daily using a two-way radio, and/or communication device in order to respond to work-related routine and emergency information;
  • Ensures shop equipment is in proper working condition;
  • Performs housekeeping duties to maintain a clean, uncluttered, and safe work environment;
  • Mixes, matches, and applies stains, dyes, and finishes and ensures their proper storage and disposal; matches lumber types and grades;
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
 
Environmental Factors/Occupational Exposures:
 
The primary physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in both extreme heat and cold conditions, as well as conditions that are wet/humid, dry and during times when temperatures are below 32F for more than one-hour periods. The employee may be required to bend, squat, stretch and stand and/or work in cramped areas and/or confined space areas for prolonged periods of times. Environment may frequently include dust and/or airborne particles and occasionally loud noise, electricity/high voltage, chemicals, gases, fumes, and vibration. For this reason, employee is required to wear designated personal protective equipment to include, but not limited to, ANSI-approved safety eyewear, gloves, hearing protection, full-face shield, and footwear to prevent exposures to hazardous materials, noise, dust and/or airborne particles. Must be able to wear designated respirator when required as part of the personal protective equipment. The employee is required to climb stairs and ladders up to 40 ft., work from scaffolding and high areas using appropriate harness and tether equipment, and use ramps and aerial lift devices above ground.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of carpentry practices, terminology and safe handling of tools and equipment.
  • Ability to operate common woodworking machinery, prepare rough sketches of work and estimates of materials and labor, read blueprints and recognize lumber types and grades.
  • Ability to keep simple records and basic math skills.
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions, maintain required records, and read and understand manuals and drawings.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
  • Interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and interact with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks in order to meet the needs of the unit and its customers.

Required Minimum Training and Experience:

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent. Minimum of four (4) years’ experience in the trade as a journeyman carpenter.

Special Requirements:

  • Ability to routinely move, lift and/or carry, with or without assistance, equipment, parts, and job related materials exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move, lift, and/or carry objects.
  • Ability to accurately discern colors.
  • Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license in order to drive University of Delaware vehicles to get to and from job sites.
  • Must provide all hand tools necessary to perform assigned duties.
