Instructor and Assistant Professor, Continuing Track Faculty Positions
Medical Laboratory Sciences
Department of Medical and Molecular Sciences
The Department of Medical and Molecular Sciences is seeking continuing track faculty to teach in our NAACLS-accredited Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) program. These individuals should have the skills and innovation required to effectively teach university courses for MLS students and participate in appropriate scholarly and service activities consistent with the Department's vision, mission, and philosophy. Eligible candidates should have at least three years of clinical laboratory experience, preferably with an emphasis in hematology or microbiology. Ideal candidates should demonstrate competence in both didactic and clinical education and the ability to deliver the MLS curriculum in both the traditional classroom and online.
The department is seeking two (2) qualified candidates, one at the rank of Assistant Professor and the other at the rank of instructor or assistant professor. The anticipated start date is August 15, 2027. MMSC offers undergraduate and graduate programs in the clinical, biomedical, and pre-health sciences. Successful candidates are expected to teach lectures and student lab courses at the undergraduate and graduate level in the department, primarily in areas of medical laboratory science. A generalist background is preferred, although experience in hematology or microbiology is desired.
Selected candidates will be expected to advise graduate students, pursue scholarly activities, and perform service to the university, department, and professional community. Content knowledge in the biomedical sciences and a demonstrated commitment to using evidence-based teaching methods are required. Incumbents also work with clinical affiliates to support students in their clinical rotations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Successful candidates will have at least three years of clinical laboratory experience, teaching and professional experience. Knowledge of biomedical sciences and commitment to evidence-based teaching, including MLS(ASCP)CM certification or equivalent is required. A doctoral degree (Ph.D., Sc.D., Ed.D., D.C.L.S., or similar) or a doctoral candidate with ABD (all but dissertation) in medical laboratory science, clinical laboratory science, or a related biomedical field is required for the rank of Assistant Professor. A master’s degree is required for the rank of Instructor.
Preferred qualifications include specialist certification in hematology or microbiology; college-level teaching experience, including laboratory instruction; and familiarity with NAACLS accreditation standards. The ability to teach an additional MLS subject area, such as urinalysis and body fluids, clinical chemistry, or immunohematology, or to contribute to graduate-level courses in biostatistics, research design, or laboratory management is also preferred.
For both positions, appointments at the applicable academic rank is subject to the candidate’s qualifications, experience, and departmental faculty vote, in accordance with the University’s collective bargaining agreement (CBA).
THE DEPARTMENT:
MMSC is an agile, student-centered department recognized for innovation in education, research, outreach, and practice. We have expanded undergraduate offerings to include Medical Laboratory Science (NAACLS-accredited), Applied Molecular Biology & Biotechnology (ASBMB-accredited), and two Medical Diagnostics majors (one uniquely preparing students for Physician Assistant programs). Graduate education has grown with three professionally focused master’s degrees alongside our established Ph.D. in Molecular Biosciences. We actively collaborate with academic, clinical, community, and industry partners to enrich experiential learning and broaden access to STEM.
THE COLLEGE:
The College of Health Sciences is a dynamic, innovative academic unit with more than 3,400 undergraduate and graduate students and 131 faculty, who are nationally recognized leaders across multiple disciplines. The College is housed in multiple buildings on the traditional main campus but also is an anchor tenant of the University’s Science, Technology, and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus. STAR has become an exciting center that combines business, research and education, focused on leading topics in health science, biopharmaceuticals, data science, engineering, finance and other cross-cutting fields of study. In addition to Kinesiology and Applied Physiology (ranked #6 according to the National Academy of Kinesiology), the College has six additional academic units, including Communication Sciences and Disorders, Epidemiology, Health Behavior and Nutrition Sciences, Medical and Molecular Sciences, Physical Therapy (ranked #1 by US News and World Report), and the School of Nursing. With annual research expenditures of approximately $20 million, the college currently houses a number of large, interdisciplinary grants with significant funding from the NIH and DoD. The college boasts strong research teams in the areas of neurological disorders, cardiovascular health, and other chronic disease conditions, as well as rehabilitation science and concussion.
One of the oldest institutions of higher education in the United States, the University of Delaware has a rich history of contributing scientific insights and new ideas, fostering enlightenment, transforming lives and changing the world. Today under the leadership of President Laura Carlson, the University is committed to building on this legacy to meet the complex challenges facing the globe. The University’s foremost priority remains to ensure the success of every student, and this commitment dates back to our roots as a small private academy founded in 1743. From that early school, which educated three signers of the Declaration of Independence, UD has grown into a research-intensive, technologically advanced institution that is at the forefront of innovation in the classroom, in the laboratory and in the community.
Located in scenic Newark, Delaware, within 2 hours of New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., the University is a Land Grant, Sea Grant, Space Grant, and Carnegie Research University (with very high research activity, a designation accorded to fewer than 3% of degree-granting institutions in the U.S.), and with external funding exceeding $200 million. A state-assisted, privately governed institution, the University enrolls approximately 18,600 undergraduates and 4,500 graduate students.
