The Office of Economic Innovation and Partnerships (OEIP) at the University of Delaware (UD) is seeking a Marketing [Research] Specialist to join an interdisciplinary team of engineers, marketing specialists, and designers to work together as an interdisciplinary team with an innovative company seeking to assess opportunities within existing markets for their existing product, as well as expansion into new markets.

Role Description:

The student team will work as an independent team, in close consultation and under the guidance of experts and mentors, to conduct in-depth market and business research, analyses to validate existing identified markets and explore new, potential markets where product(s) are most competitive.

This Spin In® team will be based in a dedicated space located at the Fintech Innovation Hub on the UD STAR campus. Weekly team meetings required; live, in-person format.

Position as Marketing [Research] Specialist:

The responsibilities entail taking part in a collaborative team to include the following:

  • Develop a clear understanding of the existing product, application and features.
  • Understand initial primary market focus; identify and analyze existing solutions and competing products and services; conduct SWOT analysis for proposed solution.
  • Conduct competitive analysis within existing market focus; identify market gaps, areas for differentiation.
  • Develop target market and customer profiles; identify customer needs and parameters for a launch of successful product/service.
  • Develop aspects of marketing plan, including product, price, positioning and promotion.
  • Explore new opportunities within healthcare industry; recommend new industries for market entry where existing product would provide value (product positioning). Include SWOT, competitive analysis, technical analysis, etc. to support recommendations.
  • Recommend strategies for entering healthcare industry, and others, as relative to product meeting needs of customers.
  • Engage with Business and Finance Analyst to analyze preliminary pricing and financial models to best position the product for commercial success.

Professional qualifications:

  • Enrolled in BS program in business, marketing, communications, or related field.
  • Direct experience and ability to engage in market research and use of research software tools.
  • Ability analyze data and draw conclusions from market research.
  • Knowledge of components of marketing plan, competitive analysis (SWOT), strategy development based on customer needs/profiles.
  • High attention to detail; excellent communication skills and leadership skills.
  • Ability to engage with potential customers to gain insight (customer discovery), a plus.

 

Personal qualifications:

The successful candidate will be a personally motivated self-starter; and can also work with little guidance. Must have ability to actively engage with other members on the team, including students, peers, mentors, and experts to further develop his or her knowledge to solve work related challenges. The candidate must be capable of contributing and achieving in a small, highly collaborative, consensus-driven team. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required.

 

This paid position begins September 2025 and runs through the May 2026 (Spring Semester), with a possibility of Summer Session (through August 2026).  Average hours of 15 hours per week.  Dates will be finalized during hiring process.  Rate of pay is $15.00 per hour.
