The Office of Orientation & Transition Programs (OTP) at University of Delaware ignites student success and belonging through intentionally designed experiences that connect all students and families to essential resources and opportunities for engagement. Each year OTP provides orientation and transition opportunities to 4,000+ incoming students and their families through our signature programs, New Student Orientation, UD Welcome Days, and Parents & Family Weekend. The Orientation Leader position primarily contributes to New Student Orientation and UD Welcome Days.

Role Description:

The Orientation Leader (OL) position provides students the unique leadership opportunity to officially welcome new Blue Hens to the University of Delaware! OLs are hired to ease the transition of the new first-year, transfer, and international students, and their families as they begin their relationship with UD. OLs aid in academic, social, and cultural acclimation to the university. OLs also serve as a resource for new students and their families by providing honest and current information about all aspects of UD. Through this leadership position, OLs are also able to gain essential skills that are easily transferable into their professional careers and life after UD.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a welcoming and knowledgeable ambassador for the university, fostering a sense of belonging for new students and their families
  • Assist with and facilitate orientation sessions which may include small-group discussions, presentations, icebreakers, and more.
  • Provide accurate information about academic expectations, campus resources, policies, and more.
  • Serve as a role model and support for incoming students and families by answering questions, offering advice and guidance, and modeling true Blue Hen pride!
  • Collaborate effectively with fellow Orientation Leaders, student supervisors, and professional staff to execute orientation programs and events
  • Maintain professionalism and accountability by adhering to program expectations, schedules, dress standards, and communication protocols
  • Engage in required training, meetings, and professional development activities to build leadership, communication, and teamwork skills
  • Participate in goal-setting and formal performance evaluation activities throughout employment and meet with assigned Student Coordinator and/or OTP Staff member regularly  
  • Represent the Orientation & Transition Programs office positively during all programs, trainings, and interactions with campus partners

Eligibility Requirements

  • OLs must have attended the University of Delaware for at least one semester as a full-time student before January 2026  
  • OLs must enroll as a full-time student and maintain undergraduate status through Fall 2026   
  • OLs must have and maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA and be in good academic and community standing with the University  
  • OLs must not take any Summer 2026 classes  
  • OLs must be able to assist with Winter NSO January 2027 (tentative dates). Training provided. 
  • OLs will attend spring training and retreats which take place in April and May, times and locations TBD.
  • OLs will attend OL Training from June 8-19, 2026, during which time all activities will be coordinated by OTP staff, and OLs will be expected to work 7 am-7pm on weekdays and potential times on weekends
  • Beginning June 7, 2026, OLs will move to an on-campus residence hall. 
  • OLs will be present for all orientation sessions during June and July 2026. NSO sessions occur on weekdays apart from the July 4th holiday. OLs will be expected to work on NSO days, and some evening work hours may also be assigned. NSO will have both virtual and in-person components   
  • OLs will be required to work August NSO and UD Welcome Days. These dates are TBD. (RAs and students in Marching Band are the ONLY students who will be exempt)  

Additional Compensation:

  • As mentioned above, OLs will receive a TOTAL $4000 stipend (pre-tax) that will be split and paid out during their summer employment.
  • Orientation Leaders can receive up to an additional $250 working Winter NSO in January 2027.
  • OLs will receive on-campus housing for the duration of their summer employment (June 7 through July TBD) at no cost to the student.
  • OLs will receive meals during programs and training, as well as an on-campus meal plan during the duration of their summer employment (June 7th through July TBD) at no cost to the student.
  • Uniforms will be provided.
