About the Department/Center:

The Center for Intercultural Engagement is located on the 2nd floor of the Perkins Student Center. It houses the department of Student Diversity & Inclusion, as well as seven registered student organizations, an Interfaith Prayer & Meditation Room, the campus Food & Supply Pantry, and the Clothing Coop.

 

Role Description:

Working with staff in Student Diversity and Inclusion and the Center for Intercultural Engagement, the Blue Hen Essentials Assistants provide support for the implementation of essential needs/food insecurity resources for students, including support for both the Food & Supply Pantry and Clothing Coop daily operations, volunteering events, and programs such as Mini Markets and Clothing Coop Kiosks.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with staff around food pantry and clothing services, which include email correspondence, processing inventory, receiving, and packaging items, holding visiting hours, and maintaining quality controls
  • Work with staff to facilitate volunteering events
  • Maintain inventory records and inform professional staff of low inventory
  • Assist in the maintenance of both service spaces to ensure cleanliness and adherence to health and hygiene protocols 
  • Assist in logistical support for Mini Market, Mobile Food Pantry, and Clothing Coop Kiosk events across campus
  • Deliver food and supplies as needed to food zone partners across campus and pop-up food events 
  • Assist in logistical support for monthly Mobile Food Pantry events across campus
  • Assist in programming that educates students, staff, and faculty about basic needs insecurity and advocacy for students experiencing these insecurities
  • Assist in the assessment of the Blue Hen Essentials services
  • Develop recommendations for improvement of services and implement and assess changes
  • Serve as an ambassador across campus for food security & basic needs initiatives 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

 

Qualifications:  

  • Must be enrolled as an undergraduate student at the University of Delaware on the Newark campus
  • Ability to work with undergraduate and graduate students who have experienced financial and food insecurity, and emergencies
  • Ability to maintain a high level of communication, confidentiality, timeliness, and reliability
  • Excellent organizational skills in fast-paced environments
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice, specifically in the areas of food and financial insecurities
  • Outstanding interpersonal and community relations skills, and the ability to establish and maintain collaborative and effective working relationships with students and staff
  • Effective leadership, team building, and collaboration skills
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to take initiative and responsibility for projects and the development of services
  • Skills in independent judgment to plan, prioritize, and organize a diversified workload with attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications

  • Students with Federal Work Study are encouraged to apply, but work study is not necessary for student employment
  • Experience with customer service, inventory management, retail, and/or community services are preferred but not required
