About the Department/Center:

Student Diversity & Inclusion (SDI) is part of the Division of Student Life. We endeavor to enhance diversity and inclusion opportunities and engagement for students. We offer student internships, create and facilitate programs and trainings, and advocate for students around fairness and access. We strive to build and provide community for all students, including students of color, LGBTQ+ students, and first generation college students.

Role Description:

Working with the program coordinator in Student Diversity and Inclusion (SDI), the First Generation Programs Support Intern will assist with the development and execution of all educational and programmatic SDI initiatives relating to the experiences of first generation college students at the University of Delaware.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with staff around first-generation college student experiences
  • Support the development of large- and small-scale programs within Student Diversity and Inclusion, including National First Generation Celebration Week 
  • Contribute ideas and new perspectives on building first-generation college student engagement
  • Serve as a liaison between SDI and first-generation students on campus 
  • Serve as a mentor to up to five first-year first-generation college students 
  • Assist with efforts to launch new first-generation supports, such as a First Generation Experience Committee, a Tri Alpha chapter, a mentorship program, and graduation events 
  • Engage in assessment and research efforts, which may include marketing and promotion of surveys and other data collection strategies, and participation in data interpretation and analysis strategies 
  • Collect and gather information and resources from UD comparator institutions and external-to-UD organizations around first-generation student supports
  • Develop recommendations for the improvement of first-generation student supports on campus 
  • Serve as an ambassador for Student Diversity & Inclusion and participate in the general promotion of student success and engagement around diversity and inclusion
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications:  

  • Ability to work with undergraduate and graduate students who are first-generation college students
  • Experience working with underrepresented students in higher education 
  • Proficient in Google Applications, Microsoft Office Suite, and Canva
  • Demonstrates initiative and is reliable and dependable in performing job-related projects and tasks
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Effective leadership, team building, and collaboration skills
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Interest in higher education/student life, graduate education, or professional experiences 
  • Knowledgeable about first generation college student experiences
  • Engagement with diverse student populations and interests at UD
  • Demonstrated commitment and interest in community & belonging
