Summary:

The Assistant Director is a member of the Division of Student Life, and reports to the Director, Orientation & Student Leadership Programs. The Assistant Director is responsible for the successful development, implementation, and innovative maintenance of leadership programs which impact students’ academic and personal achievement at Rowan, and is expected to provide overall support to make each program a success. This position specifically works to translate student organization involvement into experiential learning and leadership development for students. The Assistant Director supports the fraternity/sorority community at Rowan University by advising multiple fraternity/sorority council(s) and organizations, as well as providing administrative support and training. The Assistant Director is required to assist with emergencies that occur after normal business hours. In all activities, the Assistant Director recognizes that experiential learning and service to students are top priorities.

Essential Functions/Percentage of Time Spent on Each:

 Leadership Rowan (90%)

  • Supervise all systems and processes related to the University’s Greek organizations, including, but not limited to, organization recognition, governance councils, chapter advising, new/active membership education, Greek Affairs programming, campus/community partnerships, risk management, and serving as a liaison with national offices.
  • Assist in the successful development, implementation, and innovative maintenance of leadership programs and services targeted at developing effective student organizations which provide experiential learning opportunities for undergraduates.
  • Provide training and support for faculty and staff serving as student organization advisors; promote collaborations around student leadership development.
  • Supervise graduate coordinators (2) for fraternity/sorority life and assist in developing programs and services delivered by this staff.
  • Oversee fiscal affairs of the Greek Affairs budget organization.
  • Participate in Leadership Rowan advisory council and planning meetings.
  • Update and revise departmental websites, social media accounts, and printed publications. Advise student organization leaders in the development of publications.
  • Assist in tracking fraternity and sorority membership, events, and chapter records in ProfLink.
  • Lead fraternity and sorority recruitment and new member education programs in conjunction with the Assistant Director for Student Leadership Development.
  • Serves as an advisor for assigned Greek governing boards/councils and individual chapters.
  • Continually expand leadership development, risk management, and community service initiatives.
  • Organize and participate in risk-reduction education and programming.
  • Coordinate Greek leadership retreats and workshops.
  • Meet regularly with chapter advisors and maintain open communication with national/international leadership.

Other Functions (10%)

  • Assist Student Life staff with planning, staffing, and executing distinctive orientation and welcome programs for new students and their parents & family members.
  • Evaluate student learning outcomes achieved through departmental efforts and contribute to the Office of Orientation & Student Leadership Programs’ annual institutional assessment report.
  • Serve on University committees, as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Education:

Master's Degree in educational leadership, higher education administration, counseling, student development, student personnel services, or related field is required. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience:

One or more years of professional experience in higher education or related field (student affairs graduate positions may be considered for this experience).

Specific Skills:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Greek systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and conduct staff training and development, workshops, and/or student educational interventions.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with orientation, first-year programs, and/or student leadership development programs on a college or university campus is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to combine data from multiple sources into manageable reports and documents; regularly perform mail merge and other data management and manipulation tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, plan, set goals & objectives, organize, follow through, and assess effectiveness is necessary.
  • Ability to maintain an appropriate level of professional and personal confidentiality.
  • Must have the ability to build and nurture collaborative relationships with diverse faculty, staff, and student constituencies.
  • Ability to direct and supervise others, incorporate student development and/or leadership theories and technology in the selection, training, and evaluation of student employees.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects with competing deadlines is required.
  • Demonstrated commitment and sensitivity to the needs of a culturally diverse student body with diverse values and priorities.
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment and with great attention to detail.
  • Ability to conduct research, analyze data, and interpret findings.
  • Ability to plan a budget for activities supervised.
  • Experience working in a team setting, preferably in a college or university environment (such as a residence life or orientation staff member), is preferred.
  • Knowledge of all Federal, State, and municipal laws likely to have an effect upon University students.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Communication skills: Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills sufficient to develop, teach, and lead workshops and conduct public presentations using various media formats.
  • Language Skills: Ability to communicate effectively and interact tactfully with all levels of the college staff, students, parents & family members, and vendors; read, analyze, and interpret documents, budgets and contracts; and respond effectively to the inquiries or complaints.
  • Reasoning Skills: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Technology: Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office suite; familiarity with, or ability to learn, Adobe Creative Suite, social media tools, and internal software such as Banner, ProfLink (Anthology Engage), Rowan Success Network (Starfish), and Slate.

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job:

  • Must be able to work frequent nights and some weekends.
  • Occasionally lift or transport materials weighing 40 lbs. or less (frequent lifting during the summer months).
  • Must be able to move about the campus.
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time in front of a computer terminal.
  • Will occasionally work outdoors and be exposed to weather conditions.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
