Position: The newly established Virtua Health College of Medicine and Life Sciences at Rowan University invites dynamic research-driven applicants for Chairperson for the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) at its Stratford, NJ campus. The successful candidate will: (1) be nationally and internationally recognized as a scientific leader in their research field, (2) have a record of a consistently funded research program (preferably from NIH and/or NSF), and (3) have administrative leadership experience within the academic biomedical research arena. Ideally, their research will focus on some aspect of systems aging or diseases associated with aging; however, excellent candidates from other fields of research will be considered. Specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to cardiovascular metabolism, cellular senescence and regeneration, protein homeostasis, epigenetics, genetic regulation of aging or other similar aspects of age-related disease.  A competitive startup package for the Chair’s own research program, as well as a recruitment package to enable the Chair to recruit several new faculty members to the Department to develop its future research strengths are offered.

 

Responsibilities:  The Chair is expected to: (1) maintain a nationally and internationally recognized, federally funded research program; (2) recruit new faculty in consultation with current members of the Department and the Deans’ offices to establish a critical mass of researchers with synergistic interests; (3) maximize the research potential of existing faculty; (4) cooperate with other leaders to grow the research enterprise at the Virtua Health College of Medicine and Life Sciences at Rowan; and (5) integrate the CMB curriculum and research directions into the overarching goal of combining fundamental, translational and clinical research to improve health.

 

About the Virtua Health College: Established in 2021, Virtua Health College of Medicine & Life Sciences of Rowan University is an academic health partnership between Rowan University, a top 100 public research institution, and Virtua Health, South Jersey’s largest health system. The college encompasses the state’s only osteopathic medical school; a nursing and allied health professions school; a school of translational biomedical engineering and sciences; multiple research institutes and centers; and clinical practices.

 

CMB is associated with the Schools of Osteopathic Medicine and Translational Biomedical Engineering and Sciences and will currently share space with the Department of Neuroscience within the 3-story Science Center on the Stratford campus.  CMB is part of an active graduate program with ~50 PhD students, Master’s and dual degree DO/PhD students. Newly developed Cardiovascular and Transplant-Regenerative Medicine Institutes at Virtua-Rowan offer additional multidisciplinary collaborative opportunities, as well.

 

Stratford is in suburban South Jersey, with easy access to Philadelphia and the NJ shore. Interactions with Philadelphia-based academic centers including the University of Pennsylvania, Thomas Jefferson University and Temple University and Fox Chase Cancer Center and others are readily available. Our central location also provides rapid connections to NYC and the Washington-Baltimore areas.

 

Requirements: (1) PhD, DO, MD, dual or equivalent degree, (2) nationally and internationally recognized reputation for outstanding research in the field of expertise, (3) strong record of scholarly publication and academic excellence, (4) record of successfully mentoring trainees, junior faculty, 5) have a record of a consistently federally funded research program (NIH, NSF, or similar), and 6) the desire to develop an exciting, interactive innovative environment of research excellence.
