Lead Web Content Strategist (PSS1), Web Services

The Lead Web Content Strategist will be responsible for overseeing the development of content strategies across the Rowan University website, creating and approving web content, supporting content contributors across the university, and leading a team of web content strategists. The Lead Content Strategist will also develop and organize support and training sessions on web content, and distribute work among Web Content Strategists. The position reports to the Director of Web Strategy and Development for the Rowan University Web Services team. Some evening, weekend, and holiday work is to be expected. Candidates must follow the residency requirements outlined by the New Jersey AFT.

Essential Position Responsibilities/Functions

  • Serve as the lead content strategist and Cascade power user across all Rowan websites.

  • Ability to work independently in the CMS and troubleshoot problems as they arise during the content creation process, escalating issues as needed.

  • Serve as a coordinator for content ambassadors and contributors across the university and create engaging content for all Rowan web properties.

  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to execute content objectives, troubleshoot issues as a CMS power user, and lead a team to support other users as they work in Cascade.

  • Lead both synchronous and asynchronous comprehensive contributor courses to train creators on best practices for content editing, SEO, accessibility, brand voice, and content governance.

  • Create site maps and user journeys to create clear paths for users.

  • Perform content audits to ensure accuracy, accessibility, and strategic effectiveness.

  • Define and implement content models and schemas to standardize content structures, facilitating reuse and scalability

  • Work with the Product team to plan and/or perform content moderation across the university website using tiered workflows.

  • Work with Subject Matter Experts to create high-quality content that will build Rowan’s reputation as an authoritative source.

  • Serve as an accessibility advocate, ensuring all web content meets WCAG standards.

  • Implement, support, and enforce industry web standards and best practices throughout the Rowan University website.

  • Provide support for other various Rowan University website projects and initiatives.

  • Lead web content contributors with data-driven insights by measuring, analyzing, and reporting on content performance using analytics.

Qualifications

Required

  • A bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Information, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.

  • At least more than eight (8) years of professional experience creating and optimizing web content in a CMS.

  • Technical Competencies - Candidates' robust technical experiences should include:

    • Content Management Systems (CMS): Extensive experience working with Cascade CMS or similar enterprise-level content management systems. Ability to operate independently as a power user, troubleshoot issues, and support other contributors.

    • Web Standards & Accessibility: Deep understanding of WCAG accessibility standards, HTML structure, and web best practices to ensure compliance and usability for all users.

    • SEO & Content Optimization: Strong knowledge of on-page SEO techniques, metadata optimization, and content structuring for search engine discoverability.

    • Analytics & Performance Tracking: Proficiency with Google Analytics, Google Search Console, or other web analytics tools to measure content performance, generate reports, and provide data-driven insights.

    • Content Strategy & Governance: Experience defining and implementing content models, content governance frameworks, site maps, and structured workflows to ensure consistency and scalability.

    • User Experience (UX) & Information Architecture (IA): Ability to create user journeys, wireframes, and navigation structures that improve website usability and engagement.

    • Training & Documentation: Experience leading training sessions (both live and asynchronous) for content contributors, covering best practices in web content management, accessibility, and SEO.

    • Collaboration & Communication: Ability to coordinate and work with cross-functional teams, including content contributors, designers, developers, and external stakeholders, to execute content objectives.

    • Problem-Solving & Troubleshooting: Strong technical troubleshooting skills to diagnose and resolve issues within the CMS and web content ecosystem.

    • Experience operating independently as a power user in a CMS.

    • Detailed understanding of web standards, accessibility, content optimization, layout aesthetics, and SEO.

    • Experience working with Google Analytics or similar web analytics tools to build reports and gather user insights.

    • Experience generating content models, site maps, and optimizing user journeys.

    • Knowledge of accessibility standards and WCAG success criteria.

Preferred

  • A master’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Information, or related field.

  • Experience creating and optimizing web content in a higher education environment.

  • Experience working in Cascade CMS.

  • Experience working with web developers and understanding of the web development process.

  • Proven ability to stay current with rapidly-changing technologies.
