The Web Product Architect will leverage technical knowledge and organizational skills to comprehensively provide support for the Rowan University website and related web-based initiatives. The Web Product Architect will also collaborate with the Director and others on the Web Services team to develop a comprehensive road map for the university’s web products. The position reports to the Director of Web Strategy and Development for the Rowan University Web Services team. Some evening, weekend, and holiday work is to be expected. Candidates must follow the residency requirements outlined by the New Jersey AFT.

Essential Position Responsibilities/Functions

  • Develop a vision and road map for content management system products to implement Rowan University websites.
  • Research contributors’ needs to inform website- and CMS-related decisions.
  • Engage and collaborate with stakeholders to translate business requirements into well-architected, sustainable, and scalable solutions that best leverage our CMS platform and website technologies.
  • Create a governance plan for content and CMS-editing, including the development of workflows for content moderation.
  • Provide guidance and support to content editors in managing and publishing content through the CMS interface.
  • Establish processes to organize various technical components, content modules, and data structures within the CMS to maintain the system’s flexibility and scalability.
  • Develop both synchronous and asynchronous training sessions for website contributors across the university.
  • Lead the architecture and configuration of CMS to ensure it meets the evolving needs of Rowan University’s web presence.
  • Provide support and guidance for incidents.
  • Maintain day-to-day operations of the CMS, including technical configuration, third-party integrations, user management, and ongoing maintenance for the Rowan University website.
  • Collaborate closely with the development team to provide guidance on the CMS implementation of projects.
  • Conduct thorough testing of CMS upgrades and implementations to ensure functionality, performance, and security meet organizational standards.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to CMS configuration, module integration, and content publishing.
  • Document content guidelines, technical specifications, implementation details, and CMS configuration guidelines.
  • Stay up to date with digital trends and best practices to continually improve the underlying data structure of the university website.
  • Provide support for other various Rowan University website projects and initiatives.

Qualifications

Required

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • At least four (4) years of professional position-related experience.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience defining and implementing content models, content governance frameworks, site maps, and structured workflows to ensure consistency and scalability.
  • Experience coordinating cross-functional teams, including content contributors, designers, developers, and external stakeholders, to execute content objectives.
  • Understanding of web standards, accessibility, optimization, usability, layout aesthetics, content strategy, and SEO.
  • Technical Competencies - Candidates' robust technical experiences should include:
    • Content Management Systems (CMS): Extensive experience working with Cascade CMS or similar enterprise-level content management systems. Ability to operate independently as a power user, troubleshoot issues, and support other contributors.
    • Web Standards & Accessibility: Deep understanding of accessibility standards, HTML structure, and web best practices to ensure compliance and usability for all users.
    • SEO & Content Optimization: Strong knowledge of on-page SEO techniques, metadata optimization, and content structuring for search engine discoverability.
    • Analytics & Performance Tracking: Proficiency with Google Analytics, Google Search Console, or other web analytics tools to measure content performance, generate reports, and provide data-driven insights.
    • User Experience (UX) & Information Architecture (IA): Ability to create user journeys, wireframes, and navigation structures that improve website usability and engagement.
    • Collaboration & Communication: 
    • Problem-Solving & Troubleshooting: Strong technical troubleshooting skills to diagnose and resolve issues within the CMS and web content ecosystem.
    • Experience operating independently as a power user in a CMS.
    • Detailed understanding of web standards, accessibility, content optimization, layout aesthetics, and SEO.
    • Experience working with Google Analytics or similar web analytics tools to build reports and gather user insights.
    • Experience generating content models, site maps, and optimizing user journeys.
    • Proficiency in using, configuring, and/or customizing CMS platforms, such as Cascade, Drupal/Backdrop, WordPress, or similar.
    • Strong understanding of content modeling concepts and experience designing/organizing data structures, content modules, and relationships.
    • Knowledge of front-end technologies, including HTML, CSS, Sass, JavaScript, and modern JavaScript frameworks.
  • Ability to work independently and solve problems with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving skills, and communication skills paired with a strong student-first and customer service orientation.
  • Proven ability to stay current with rapidly-changing technologies.

Preferred

  • Experience working in an Agile/Scrum development environment using project management and repository management tools (e.g. GitHub, GitLab, or Jira).
  • Understanding of Unix/Linux, Apache, PHP, MySQL, and other backend server technologies.
  • Experience supporting web systems in a higher education environment.
