Position: Assistant Director of Volunteer Engagement

Job Description 

This position devises strategies to build and maintain relationships with alumni, strengthen alumni engagement, and deepen alumni affinity to Rowan and its programs through the development and administration of regional and shared interest alumni programming.  

This position recruits, trains, manages, and stewards alumni volunteers, executes alumni events and outreach, and partners with College, School, and departmental representatives to support alumni engagement efforts throughout Rowan University. This role collaborates with campus partners - including students, faculty, and staff - to engage alumni for prospect identification and maximize constituent participation in the Division of University Advancement’s engagement and fundraising efforts. 

Responsibilities: 

  • In collaboration with the Alumni Engagement department and Division of University Advancement, this position implements a comprehensive strategy to engage Rowan University’s alumni and the extended Rowan community through regional and shared interest engagement opportunities. 

  • Manage all alumni shared interest groups, including volunteer management, event coordination, goal setting, and metrics tracking. 

  • Develop regional networks to engage and activate alumni volunteers regionally, with an initial emphasis on alumni within New Jersey and the Mid-Atlantic region. 

  • Create, implement, and support engagement opportunities that connect alumni based on shared identities and interests, including extracurricular involvement, industry & careers, and institutional milestones & anniversaries. 

  • Collaborate with key campus partners to develop programs and initiatives that support institutional priorities and increase alumni volunteerism. 

  • Provide staff support to standing and ad hoc committees of the Rowan University Alumni Board of Directors. 

  • Serve as a resource for staff advisors of College & School-specific alumni councils and networks. 

  • Collaborate with the Advancement Communications department to coordinate volunteer outreach, including email marketing, social media, and direct mail campaigns. 

  • Manage an engagement portfolio of approximately 25 alumni volunteers and complete 25+ face-to-face discovery visits annually with an emphasis on engaging and qualifying potential alumni volunteers and donors. 

  • Provide support for various University Advancement initiatives and programs as assigned. 

Qualifications: 

Required Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree required from an accredited institution. 

  • Minimum of two (2) years of professional experience in volunteer management and/or institutional advancement role(s). 

Preferred Experience: 

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education, Nonprofit Management, or other related fields. 

  • Experience with Anthology Encompass/iModules or similar online constituent engagement platforms. 

  • Experience utilizing fundraising and customer relationship management (CRM) software. 

Required Skills: 

  • A proven track record of planning programs and events from concept through successful implementation. 

  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and direction to volunteers in accomplishing established goals and objectives; 

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively engage, collaborate, and communicate with diverse constituencies, including individuals from varied cultural, professional, and socioeconomic backgrounds, to foster inclusion and achieve shared goals. 

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and writing skills. 

  • Effective time management skills and ability to work as part of a team. 

  • Ability to work some nights and weekends (approximately 33% of the time) and travel to off-campus locations.
