Position Summary

The successful candidate will provide comprehensive small animal oncology care while contributing to the continued development of a modern academic service. Initial responsibilities will focus on clinical service development, oncology caseload growth, multidisciplinary collaboration, and strengthening relationships with regional referring veterinarians.

SSVM recognizes that exceptional faculty bring diverse career goals and practice models. As our DVM program matures, this position will naturally evolve to include structured clinical teaching and supervision, with anticipated student participation beginning in approximately two years. Previous academic experience is welcome but not required. We are seeking collaborative oncologists with outstanding clinical expertise, strong communication skills, and enthusiasm for helping build an exceptional academic oncology program.

About the Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine

Oncology at SSVM

The Oncology Service is central to SSVM's mission of providing compassionate, evidence-based patient care while preparing graduates who understand the principles of cancer diagnosis, treatment, and communication with families.

Our service is designed to:

  • Deliver comprehensive medical and surgical oncology consultation
  • Provide compassionate, evidence-based cancer care for companion animal patients
  • Collaborate closely with Internal Medicine, Surgery, Diagnostic Imaging, Pathology, Primary Care, and Emergency services
  • Support individualized treatment planning and spectrum-of-care decision-making
  • Strengthen relationships with referring veterinarians throughout the region
  • Provide students with outstanding educational experiences in veterinary oncology
  • Advance clinical scholarship, research, and innovation

The Oncology Service is supported by a multidisciplinary Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital equipped with:

  • GE 3 Tesla MRI
  • 128-slice CT scanner
  • Digital radiography
  • Ultrasonography
  • Clinical pathology support
  • On-site pharmacy with sterile compounding capabilities
  • Dedicated surgical facilities
  • Multidisciplinary specialty consultation

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive oncology consultation and treatment for companion animal patients
  • Develop individualized diagnostic and therapeutic cancer care plans
  • Collaborate with specialty and primary care clinicians to provide integrated patient care
  • Build relationships with regional referring veterinarians
  • Develop and refine oncology protocols, standard operating procedures, and workflow processes
  • Participate in development of oncology curriculum and pre-clinical educational experiences
  • Teach and mentor veterinary students, interns, residents, and veterinary technology students as the program develops
  • Engage in scholarly activity and collaborative clinical research
  • Contribute positively to a collaborative and supportive hospital culture

Required Qualifications

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree
  • Completion of an oncology training program with board certification or board eligibility through the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) Oncology or European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ECVIM) Oncology
  • Eligibility for veterinary licensure in New Jersey
  • Demonstrated expertise in small animal oncology
  • Strong communication skills and enthusiasm for collaboration with referring veterinarians and interdisciplinary teams
  • Adaptability, initiative, and enthusiasm for helping build a growing academic Oncology Service

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous teaching, mentoring, or academic experience
  • Interest in oncology education and curriculum development
  • Interest in clinical research or scholarly activity
  • Experience developing oncology protocols, treatment pathways, or quality improvement initiatives
  • Interest in advancing academic oncology within a collaborative referral environment

Salary and Benefits

In accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Act, the anticipated salary range for this position is $125,000–$200,000 annually, commensurate with qualifications, experience, clinical expertise, academic rank, appointment track, and appointment percentage. Final salary will be determined at the time of offer.

Faculty at Rowan University are represented by the AAUP and receive a comprehensive benefits package in accordance with collective bargaining agreements and State of New Jersey benefit programs. Benefits eligibility is based on appointment percentage and applicable University policies.

Academic Appointment

This is an open-rank faculty appointment (Instructor through Full Professor) available on either the Clinical Track or Tenure Track, depending on qualifications, experience, and professional goals.

Both full-time and part-time appointments will be considered. Faculty rank, appointment track, responsibilities, and effort allocation will be determined at the time of appointment based on the successful candidate's qualifications, career interests, and the needs of the School.

Residency Requirements

Rowan University is subject to the residency requirements of the NJ First Act (N.J.S.A. 52:14-7, P.L. 2011, Chapter 70). Any person hired to a non-exempt position shall either have their principal residence in New Jersey or have one (1) year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey.
