Position Summary

The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine (SSVM) at Rowan University is seeking a dedicated and experienced Technician Lead to support the Shelter Medicine & Community Engagement service. This position blends advanced veterinary technical expertise with frontline leadership and operational support in a mission-driven clinical and educational environment.

The Technician Lead will provide high-quality technical assistance across shelter and community-based clinical activities while delivering day-to-day oversight of support staff, supporting administrative, budget, and procurement operations, and serving as the service representative at Lead Technician meetings in collaboration with the Technician Manager.

This role is ideal for a veterinary technician passionate about population medicine, access-to-care initiatives, student teaching, and team leadership.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical & Technical Support

• Provide advanced veterinary technical support for shelter and community engagement activities, including patient handling, sample collection, anesthesia assistance, surgical support, treatments, and preventive care.
• Prepare and maintain clinical equipment, supplies, and mobile/community- based materials.
• Support medical record documentation and discharge processes as needed.
• Ensure adherence to standards of patient care, biosecurity, and safety across varied clinical environments.

Leadership & Team Oversight

• Provide day-to-day oversight and coordination of technicians and support staff within the Shelter Medicine & Community Engagement service.
• Assist with workflow organization, case flow, and task delegation.
• Support onboarding, training, and mentorship of technicians and students.
• Foster a collaborative, respectful, and accountable team culture.

Administrative & Operational Support

• Support administrative functions, including scheduling coordination, service communications, and documentation.
• Assist with budget-related processes, expense tracking, and financial documentation.
• Support procurement and inventory activities, including ordering, stock monitoring, and supply organization.
• Identify workflow or resource challenges and contribute to operational improvements.

Service Representation & Communication

• Serve as the point of contact for the Shelter Medicine & Community Engagement service at Lead Technician meetings with the Technician Manager.
• Communicate service needs, updates, and operational considerations.
• Support alignment between clinical, operational, and educational priorities.

Teaching & Academic Support

• Support veterinary students during clinical skills, labs, and service-based learning activities.
• Assist with preparation and organization of teaching materials and clinical exercises.
• Promote a positive learning environment emphasizing patient safety and professionalism.

Other Duties

• Perform additional responsibilities or special projects as assigned.
• Support departmental, hospital, and community engagement and outreach initiatives as needed.

Required Qualifications

Associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology (or equivalent).
• Credentialed Veterinary Technician (CVT/LVT/RVT) preferred or eligibility for licensure in New Jersey.
• Minimum of 3–5 years of veterinary technical experience; shelter medicine or high-volume surgery experience strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, or supervisory experience preferred.
• Experience supporting administrative, inventory, or procurement processes is a plus.
• Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work in diverse clinical environments, including shelters and community based settings with valid driver’s license and mode of reliable transportation

Salary & Benefits

In compliance with the State of New Jersey’s Pay Transparency Act, salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Lead Veterinary Assistant (Non-Credentialed)

Reporting Structure

Reports to the Technician Manager and works closely with Shelter Medicine clinicians and Clinical Sciences leadership.

Work Environment

This role involves a combination of clinical, teaching, and administrative/coordination responsibilities. The position requires adaptability, teamwork, and a commitment to patient care, education, and community engagement. This role has varying work locations and a valid driver’s license and mode of reliable transportation is required.

  • Hazards
    • Veterinary workers may be exposed to hazards like slips, trips, and falls. They may also be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises, and animal feces and urine. When working with animals that are frightened or in pain, veterinary workers risk being bitten, kicked, or scratched.
    • Veterinary workers may be exposed to hazards like bloodborne pathogens, hazardous drugs, radiation, toxic waste, and chemical hazards such as disinfectants, pesticides, and latex. 
  • Animals
    • The types of animals treated at a veterinary hospital can affect the working conditions. Our teaching hospital may consist, but is not limited to, the following types of animals: small mammals, large mammals, livestock, reptiles, avians, other exotics.

The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine is located on the Glassboro, New Jersey west campus, 22 miles southeast of Philadelphia. The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine plans to admit its first class of DVM students in 2025. Facilities will include an academic teaching facility aimed at the delivery of pre-clinical training, a small animal teaching hospital, and a research facility.
