Position Summary

The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine (SSVM) at Rowan University is seeking an experienced and highly organized Technician/Assistant Lead to support the Clinical Skills program. This position blends advanced veterinary technical expertise with hands-on teaching support, daily team oversight, and operational coordination within a dynamic academic environment.

The Technician/Assistant Lead will support clinical skills laboratories, simulation activities, and hands-on training sessions for veterinary students while providing day-to-day oversight of clinical skills support staff, assisting with administrative, budget, and procurement operations, and serving as the Clinical Skills representative at Lead Technician meetings in collaboration with the Technician Manager.

This role is ideal for a veterinary technician who is passionate about teaching, organization, systems development, and fostering a strong team culture.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical & Technical Teaching Support

• Prepare, organize, and support clinical skills laboratories, simulation exercises, and teaching sessions, including live animal labs
• Assist faculty with instructional activities, including demonstration support, equipment setup, and lab coordination.
• Maintain teaching models, simulation equipment, instruments, and supplies.
• Ensure adherence to safety, biosecurity, and instructional protocols.
• Act as liaison with clinical affiliate partners to organize and administer teaching animal labs

  • Support inventory preparation for recurring labs and multi-session teaching activities.

Leadership & Team Oversight

• Provide day-to-day oversight and coordination of Clinical Skills support staff.
• Assist with workflow planning, task delegation, and scheduling support.
• Support onboarding, training, and mentorship of technicians and support personnel.
• Promote consistency, accountability, and professionalism within the Clinical Skills team.


Administrative & Operational Support

• Assist with administrative coordination of laboratory schedules, room utilization, and faculty requests.
• Support budget tracking, expense documentation, and fiscal planning activities within the Clinical Skills program.
• Assist with procurement and inventory management, including ordering supplies, maintaining par levels, and coordinating vendor communication.
• Identify operational efficiencies and contribute to process improvement initiatives.


Service Representation & Communication

• Serve as the point of contact for Clinical Skills at Lead Technician meetings with the Technician Manager.
• Communicate program needs, scheduling considerations, and resource planning updates.
• Support alignment between Clinical Skills, Clinical Sciences, and hospital operations as needed.


Other Duties

• Participate in departmental initiatives and special projects.
• Support accreditation preparation, reporting needs, or curriculum development activities as directed.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • Associate’s Degree OR completion of an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program and evidence of passing the VTNE.
  • 1 year of experience as a Supervisor, Lead or other Leadership role in a veterinary setting.
  • 5 years of experience as a Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Assistant in a veterinary setting.
  • Ability to work in a state of alertness and it is often required to stand for extended periods, use hands to feel and reach, and lift patients and objects weighing up to 50 lbs. with or without accommodation.
    • Experience with inventory management, procurement processes, or budget support is a plus.
    • Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple labs and timelines simultaneously.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with educational model making, tool use, crafts experience preferred
  • Experience in education or skills-based training preferred
  • Experience with multiple animal patient species including small animal, equine, and farm animal species preferred

In compliance with the State of New Jersey’s Pay Transparency Act, salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.     • Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) certification eligible or achieved, or equivalent specialty-level expertise

    • Probationary Rate: $30.05/hour
    • Job Rate: $33.00/hour
    • Max Rate: $35.20/hour
    • Minimum 5 years clinical experience

Lead Veterinary Assistant (Non-Credentialed)

    • Probationary Rate: $25.08/hour
    • Job Rate: $28.55/hour
    • Max Rate: $31.97/hour
    • Associate degree or higher
    • Minimum 5 years clinical experience

Reporting Structure

Reports to the Technician Manager and works closely with Clinical Skills faculty and Clinical Sciences leadership.


Work Environment

This role is primarily based in a teaching laboratory environment with regular interaction with faculty, technicians, and veterinary students. Occasional schedule flexibility may be required to support teaching activities.

Working Conditions

  • Hazards
    • Veterinary workers may be exposed to hazards like slips, trips, and falls. They may also be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises, and animal feces and urine. When working with animals that are frightened or in pain, veterinary workers risk being bitten, kicked, or scratched.
    • Veterinary workers may be exposed to hazards like bloodborne pathogens, hazardous drugs, radiation, toxic waste, and chemical hazards such as disinfectants, pesticides, and latex. 
  • Animals
    • The types of animals treated at a veterinary hospital can affect the working conditions. Our teaching hospital may consist, but is not limited to, the following types of animals: small mammals, large mammals, livestock, reptiles, avians, other exotics.

The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine is located on the Glassboro, New Jersey west campus, 22 miles southeast of Philadelphia. The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine plans to admit its first class of DVM students in 2025. Facilities will include an academic teaching facility aimed at the delivery of pre-clinical training, a small animal teaching hospital, and a research facility.
