Examples of Duties:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:
Performs rough and finished interior and exterior carpentry work, skilled hand and bench work, and miscellaneous shop duties; designs, fabricates, repairs, refinishes, and installs cabinets, furniture, counter tops, bulletin boards, partitions, shelves, signs, etc.
Tears down old constructions; makes building maintenance repairs and alterations performing interior and exterior rough and finished carpentry work (e.g., remodels offices, builds partitions, ceilings, stairs, bridges, performs dry-wall work, etc.).
Collaborates with other trades persons regarding job/work orders.
Determines and/or gathers necessary materials required to complete a job; monitors inventory levels and reports supply needs to supervisor; maintains records of jobs.
Installs flooring to include: carpet (squares and broadloom), VCT, laminate and vinyl plank, sheet goods, hardwood, ceramic/porcelain tile, stone/quarry or similar.
Installs ceiling systems to include: acoustical tile or panels, grid systems, black iron supports and similar.
Fabricates, repairs, and installs door framings, casings, doors, locks, windows, window shades; replaces hardware, screens, mechanical and electric closures, brackets, and panic bars; may replace or install glass in windows and doors.
Installs insulation (batt: cellulose, fiberglass, foam, etc.) in buildings and structures.
Fabricates and installs counter tops and backsplash made of wood, laminate, solid surface, granite or similar materials.
Installs and repairs roofing to include: both flat roofs (EPDM-synthetic rubber roofing membrane, modified, rubber, rolled, etc.) and sloped roofs (shingled, metal, etc.). Performs roof and associated material inspections; installs and repairs flashing, wall caps, gutters, scuppers, drains, spouting, overflows, and similar. May be required to move pavers, ballasts, snow, ice, or similar man-made or natural barrier to identify, locate and make repairs.
Installs and repairs Exterior Insulation Finishing Systems (EFIS) such as Dryvit® or similar product(s).
Installs cement/concrete and associated forms; pours, finishes, cuts, seals cement; performs associated cement and concrete work. Builds associated forms.
Erects steel structures, framing, forming, and other forms of iron/metal work.
Cleans shop, oils, cleans, and repairs equipment, and sharpens tools.
Drives vehicle to pick up and deliver personnel and materials; may operate fork lift to move lumber bundles, roofing materials, etc.
May train and direct student employees or employees in a lower pay grade in proper carpentry procedures; may participate in training new employees.
May assist other tradespersons as required.
Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:
|
High school diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of carpentry apprenticeship with valid journeyman card in industrial or commercial carpentry. Requires on and off-campus travel.
OR
High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum of ten years skilled work experience in carpentry in all areas (e.g.., rough, finished and cabinetry work, heavy timber construction). Requires on and off-campus travel.
License/Certification:
Valid Ohio driver's license with safe driving record.
Knowledge Of:
Carpentry terminology and techniques * Carpentry tools * Appropriate safety practices *
Skill In:
Carpentry * Use of hand and power tools * Use of various types of aerial lifts and fall protection systems
Ability To:
Interpret and apply blueprints and job estimates * Lift 100 pounds and successfully use a Type IA ladder * Perform mathematics associated with trade applications (e.g., geometry, adding fractions, etc.) * Perform dry-walling * Read (e.g., damage reports, work orders), write (e.g., to record materials used, hours worked) and accurately follow oral, written, and graphic instructions * Maintain accurate records * Work in high places * Perform masonry work * Communicate with University personnel and public (e.g., to explain work being performed in area, gather information at job site) in person, over the telephone or electronically * Operate computerized equipment Learn new skills in the application and installation of new building materials and products Provide positive customer service Work independently or with a team Work varied hours and shifts to include evenings, weekends and holidays Use appropriate PPE, e.g., Respirator

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:
|
Exposed to sawdust, dirt, fumes, chemicals, heights, loud equipment noise, variable temperatures and weather conditions, and potentially dangerous equipment (e.g., power saws); requires considerable physical exertion to include frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds (e.g., lumber, furniture) and occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds (e.g., doors), climbing ladders, and extended periods of standing and assuming awkward positions. May be called to work in emergency situations; requires on- and off-campus travel.
