Ethnic Studies at USD addresses the lives, labor, and cultures of communities of color through ethnic-specific and comparative lenses. Through our unique partnerships with local and grassroots organizations throughout San Diego, students actively explore issues of equity, power and social justice in and out of the classroom. As with other ethnic studies departments and programs nationwide, USD's Ethnic Studies department is committed to a corrective and redemptive vision by linking its intellectual and academic goals with the needs of local communities and with the needs of the USD community.

Detailed Description:

The Department of Ethnic Studies invites applications for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Ethnic Studies with a specialization in Asian American & Pacific Islander Studies beginning in the Fall 2025. Candidates should have expertise in the transnational Asian Diaspora that emphasizes popular culture and political movements. 

Our teacher-scholar model includes a 3-3 teaching load. Successful candidates should demonstrate the potential for excellence in undergraduate teaching. With the goals of supporting students from groups underrepresented in their disciplines and of building collaborative communities of interdisciplinary teacher-scholars, this hire, as well as other hires in the College of Arts and Sciences, will build upon cluster hires in the following areas: Climate Change and Environmental Justice, Borders and Social Justice, and Technology and the Human Experience. Candidates with a subspecialty or demonstrated interest in the topics will have the opportunity to join an interdisciplinary cohort with other scholars from across the College of Arts and Sciences. Job Requirements:

The successful candidates will

  • Hold an advanced degree, preferably a doctorate or other terminal degree. ABD candidates will be considered on a case by case basis.
  • Have demonstrated a commitment to teaching and research, mentoring undergraduates, and fostering a climate of inclusion and diversity.

Qualified candidates for this position should hold a PhD or terminal degree in Ethnic Studies or a related field and have expertise in Asian American & Pacific Islander Studies. Applicants must have an active research agenda and be able to teach introductory and advanced undergraduate courses in areas such as, Introduction to Ethnic Studies, Introduction to Asian American Studies, Race and Globalization, and courses in the candidate’s expertise. Demonstrated experience working with Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities and mentoring BIPOC students is strongly preferred.

Posting Salary:

$6,932-7,250/month; Excellent Benefits

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position.  Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
