Detailed Description:

The University of San Diego’s Copley Library seeks an energetic and enthusiastic leader to head our Access and Outreach Services Department. The successful candidate will oversee circulation, interlibrary loan, document delivery, San Diego Circuit, copyright, reserves, inventory, stack management, building security, disaster preparedness, and billing and collection of overdue fines and lost materials. This is a 12-month tenure-track faculty position.

Reporting to the Dean of the University Library and working under the direction of the Associate Dean and Head of Collections, Access, and Discovery, the Head of Access and Outreach Services provides leadership for the Access and Outreach Services Department. The librarian coordinates hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating all personnel and services. Also, they monitor Ex Libris Alma. The librarian maintains high customer service standards and courteous conflict resolution with patrons. They frequently communicate with USD Public Safety about safety, security, and difficult patron issues and are the primary contact for emergency responders on evenings and weekends. This person serves as a liaison to the FirstGen Program (undergrad and grad) and a small academic department and provides instruction for First Year Writing classes. This faculty member offers outreach services to non-academic units on campus, including Admissions, Student Wellness, Disability Services, Career Development Center, Information Technology Service, and others. Collects and maintains statistics and enforces and follows library and university policies.  As a faculty member, they must be active at the state and national levels in the library profession, especially in organizations committed to access and outreach services, and maintain a progressive record of scholarly and professional achievement. 

The Head of Access and Outreach Service must be able to work a varied schedule to cover and/or supervise the Access Services Desk when needed.  They work Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., but work hours may vary one or two days per week to connect with evening staff. 

This position is responsible for ensuring library coverage during the two-week 24/7 finals period, which includes scheduling staff and hiring additional temporary personnel to cover the library’s extended hours.

Degree Verification Requirement: Persons offered employment in this position will be required to provide official education transcripts for degree verification purposes. 

Job Requirements:

Required: MLS or MLIS Degree; two or more years as a professional librarian in an academic or university library; experience with the Ex Libris Alma; experience working in Circulation/Access Services Department; experience in Outreach Services in an academic library; demonstrated ability collecting and maintaining statistics; demonstrated management and supervisory skills; strong customer-service orientation; excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; ability to work effectively both independently and as a team member; demonstrated service on library and university committees and participation in professional development, as well as the ability to meet reappointment, promotion, and tenure criteria.

Preferred: consortial resource-sharing experience; presentation and instruction experience; knowledge of trends in academic libraries as they relate to Access and Outreach Services; willingness to learn software required for work; and ability to develop promotional materials for outreach services.

Posting Salary:

Salary commensurate with experience. Salary range: $6,931.25-7,660.92/month ($83,175-91,931 annualized); Excellent Benefits

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position.  Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
