Duties and Responsibilities:
Primary Responsibilities
The Assistant Director’s primary duties revolve around building, developing, and implementing the CEE’s programs. This requires creative imagining and responding to emerging needs and direct requests from faculty and other campus stakeholders. It also requires continual learning and expanding expertise on pedagogical best practices in higher education. This work is done in collaboration and coordination with the Director, however the Assistant Director exercises authority to formulate and implement the operational practices of CEE programming. The work entails the following activities:
Cultivating Partnerships
The Assistant Director strategically networks, meets with, and develops relationships with key campus partners such as Deans’ offices, the Core Director, the Mulvaney Center, the Urgent Challenges Collective, the Changemaker Hub, and the Center for Restorative Justice. The Assistant Director works closely with the CEE’s faculty liaisons, guiding or co-creating programs facilitated by liaisons. The Assistant Director may choose to pursue partnerships with relevant entities off campus as well, such as teaching and learning centers on other campuses. The goals of this work are to:

Cultivate relationships for co-creation and collaboration on future programs
Deepening Expertise
The Assistant Director engages in ongoing professional growth activities. This might take various forms, but will center on deepening expertise in pedagogical best practices in higher education, anchored in antiracism and equity. This work will likely take such forms as: participating in conferences, retreats or other learning opportunities; reading new and established scholarship on teaching and learning; and attending seminars on current best practices for faculty development. The Assistant Director exercises discretion over their professional development budget (subject to final approval by the Director). The goals for this work are to:

Contribute directly to the creation and development of CEE programs

Curate meaningful and accessible content for CEE newsletters, including Your Teaching Toolkit and The Community Builder as well as other outreach to faculty

Guide future directions for the CEE
Innovating Programs
The Assistant Director synthesizes the ideas and knowledge from ongoing learning activities to deepen expertise with the ideas garnered from activities to cultivate partnerships in order to create new CEE programs for faculty and to innovate changes to existing programs. This work requires critical thinking, creative imagining, and a grounding in USD’s institutional culture and constraints. The work entails the following activities:

Assist the Director with the center’s internal assessment process.

Identify where CEE’s strategic plan is aligned with USD’s Envisioning 2024 goals.

Develop CEE’s end-of-year report for distribution to stakeholders and Provost’s Office.

Work with the Director in developing assessment plans and determining needs and interests for future CEE projects.
Implementing Programs
The Assistant Director directs and oversees the implementation of CEE programs, including planning, scheduling, logistics, and follow up with facilitators, speakers, and participants. The Assistant Director participates in some elements of program implementation and has the authority to determine when and which tasks are appropriate. The work entails the following activities:

Oversee the daily management and supervision of the center’s operations and team.

Direct and supervise the creation and integrity of the CEE’s website and the design, development, and distribution of marketing materials for print, social media, and e-publications.

Lead meetings, such as advisory board and faculty liaison meetings, as coordinated with the Director.

Compose and distribute monthly program summary emails to distribute to the CEE team and advisory board members.

Review and make decisions on faculty grant and award applications and oversee the distribution of the grants and awards.
Ensuring Alignment with CEE’s Mission and Values
The Assistant Director routinely and systematically evaluates CEE programs and initiatives to ensure their alignment with CEE’s mission and values. The Assistant Director is charged with intervening in any stage of the process to suggest changes or to halt work entirely if the Assistant Director determines misalignment with CEE mission and values. This might occur in any phase of CEE work: creating, developing, marketing, implementing and assessing programs and initiatives.
Additional Responsibilities
Supervision

Directly supervise, direct duties and create projects for CEE staff, including undergraduate and graduate student staff.

Independently recruit, hire, onboard, and evaluate CEE staff.

Exercise autonomy and discretion over the staff development budget to lead endeavors including community building activities for the entire CEE team as well as professional development opportunities for staff.

Manage the center’s budget and expenses, and track various sources of collaborative funding.

Advise CEE Director on budget status with regular budget reports.

Job Requirements: |
Minimum Qualifications:
-
Bachelor’s Degree, with a minimum 3 years or more of experience in faculty development, instructional development or equivalent work experience (experience in a higher education setting preferred).

Master’s degree in a relevant field can be substituted for work experience requirement.

Demonstrated skills in leadership.
-
Demonstrated experience in the use of Google Suite (Drive, Docs, Sheets, etc.), Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), and marketing software such as Constant Contact, Salesforce, Canva, and Adobe Cloud (Photoshop, Acrobat, InDesign).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Planning and budget management experience preferred.
- Experience with staff supervision preferred.
