Detailed Description: |
The Outdoor Adventures Program Coordinator is responsible for assisting in creating a diverse and inclusive recreational environment that serves the University of San Diego community. The Program Coordinator works collaboratively with the departments of Residential Life, Out of State Student Network, Student Orientation, Parent Relations and the Commons. The Program Coordinator works closely with the Assistant Director of Outdoor Adventures to plan, implement and lead the Pre-Orientation Adventure program, outdoor recreation classes, as well as custom programs and teambuilding for campus partners. Logistical management, planning and execution of trips ranging from 1 to 10 days, leadership training and development for student trip leaders, developing and supervising trip programs during the academic year, developing curriculum and learning outcomes, supervising trip leaders, managing program equipment and student office staff. Assist in creating dashboard statistics and program reports. Periodically, this position may be asked to lead or contribute to either ad hoc or ongoing division/campus projects outside the scope of their day-to-day activities. Additional assignments may be seasonal, ad hoc or ongoing, depending on the project.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Trips Program Management
- Oversee the planning, coordination, and execution of a diverse array of outdoor outings throughout the year, ensuring seamless operations in areas such as scheduling, staffing, marketing, route selection, transportation, food logistics, equipment management, and budget oversight.
- Lead trips aligned with the University of San Diego’s (USD) Envisioning 2024 strategic plan, emphasizing environmental justice education for the USD community.
- Serve as the primary leader for field programs, with approximately 60 field days annually, requiring availability on weekends, evenings, and holidays.
- Maintain accurate post-trip records and reports to ensure program effectiveness and compliance with university standards.
- Serves as essential personnel in case of emergencies or other situations and will participate in risk and emergency management training.
Leadership Development and Training
- Collaborate with the Assistant Director to recruit, train, and mentor student trip guides, fostering leadership and outdoor skills through comprehensive training programs.
- Design and deliver engaging training sessions, often conducted during evenings and weekends, tailored to student outing guides and occasionally Residential Life staff or other university personnel.
- Manage the Guide Development Program, including tracking participant progress, training records, and operational metrics.
Operations and Administrative Oversight
- Support the day-to-day operations of Outdoor Adventures, including administrative responsibilities such as rental and retail management, permit acquisition, scheduling, and handling university financial transactions.
- Lead the retail operations of the department, including strategy development, revenue generation, inventory oversight, and supervising student workers to ensure excellent service and operational efficiency.
- Oversee student staff hiring, scheduling, and performance management, ensuring alignment with department goals and fostering a positive team environment.
- Contribute to or lead additional division/campus projects outside of typical duties to help further accomplish student success or organizational goals.
- Actively participate as a member of the Student Wellness staff within the Division of Student Affairs, contributing to broader university initiatives and objectives.
Special Conditions of Employment:
- This is a full-time position including evenings and weekends and multi-day overnight trips as needed.
- Must be able to travel on extended out-of-town trips and conferences. Trips will take place in the evenings, weekends and/or holidays and include irregular hours.
- Willing to work flexible hours as activities and events dictate.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness Advanced First Aid Certificate
- Leave No Trace Trainer or Master Educator
- Valid US drivers license

Job Requirements: |
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree required, preferably in recreation administration, outdoor management/recreation or other wellness related field.
- Two years of experience required in outdoor education and/or leading/guiding outdoor trips.
- Current Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness Advanced First Aid Certificate
- Leave No Trace Trainer or Master Educator certification.
- Must possess a valid US driver’s license and be approved to drive USD vehicles.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in recreation administration, public health or equivalent work experience.
- Previous experience with a college/university outdoor program, commercial guide or outfitter, and/or instructional experience with NOLS, Outward Bound, SCA, WEA, or comparable organization is highly desirable.
- Outdoor Leadership certifications in single pitch climbing, cycling, paddling, Leave No Trace or applicable competencies is desirable.
Performance Expectations - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to work with minimal supervision on a variety of projects and in varying situations.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. Ability to interact positively with various constituencies (staff, students, clients, vendors, etc).
- Ability to manage conflict and risk in dynamic environments applying sound decision making skills along with the ability to teach these skills to student leaders.
- Theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the areas of outdoor education
- recreation, student development, risk management, leadership development, environmental justice, program administration and management, group facilitation, student development theory, program planning, management and administration.
- Strong outdoor skills in at least three of the following activities: Rock Climbing (Top Managed or Single Pitch Instructor Certification), Hiking Backpacking, Teambuilding Facilitation, Flatwater Paddlesports (Canoe, Kayak, Stand Up Paddleboard).
- Familiarity with various outdoor equipment tracking and maintenance.
- Understanding of and commitment to Leave No Trace principles.
- Experience driving passenger vans and trucks with trailers.
- Willingness to support the Catholic mission and vision of the University.
- Demonstrated practice of centering diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism in one’s work including an ongoing commitment to personal learning and development in this area.
- Demonstrated commitment to student learning and development in the co-curriculum and experience assessing the impact of programs and related services.
- Excellent skills in the use of specific equipment and tools as identified below.
