Detailed Description:

Under close supervision of grounds manager and lead groundsperson, performs a variety of irrigation construction and irrigation maintenance for the use of sport fields and landscape areas of the University. Installs and maintains various types of irrigation controllers, automatic and manual valves, irrigations heads that are gear driven, impact driven, spray type and backflow preventers. Performs excavating trenches, backfills, minor grading, sodding/seeding, digging, washing and loading and unloading. May lead the work of co-workers and perform skilled manual labor requiring the use of small power equipment and hand tools.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Programs, maintains, inspects, and does moderate repair work on the University irrigation controllers with the use of appropriate hand tools.
  • Troubleshoots, installs, replaces, repairs, and cleans automatic and manual valves.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs backflow preventers with the use of appropriate hand tools.
  • Installs, replaces, repairs, cleans, adjusts, and raises/lowers irrigation heads with the use of appropriate power and hand tools.
  • Performs trenching or digging up of troubled areas. Cleans up and backfills, leaving the area safe and presentable.
  • Maintain work vehicle supplied with necessary work materials; seating area must be kept clean and uncluttered.
  • Installs, repairs, flushes, welds, and connects pipes (p.v.c copper and galvanized) with the use of appropriate power and hand tools.
  • Cleans and maintains power and hand tools assigned to facilities management in a good and safe working condition for the department.
  • Works in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Cleans up daily at the end of each job.

Safety

  • Maintains an awareness of the typical hazards of the workplace as well as the special hazards that may be encountered at any University facility location such as biohazards, low-grade radiation, and chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.
  • Consistently follows safety practices appropriate to the trade and complies with rules and regulations established by the University and governmental agencies (local, state, and federal).
  • Follows established governmental (local, state and federal) procedures for dealing with hazards and promptly report any on the job accident to Security and to the supervisor in writing.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Must have a valid California Drivers license and will be required to drive University vehicles.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Must not have allergies that could interfere with employee’s ability to work outdoors around plants, dust, fertilizer, insecticides, herbicides, and other chemical products. 
  • Must have a valid California Drivers license and will be required to drive University vehicles.
  • May take the University supplied (self-study) enrichment courses and participate in various seminars related to the trade.

Degree Verification Requirement: Persons offered employment in this position will be required to provide official education transcripts for degree verification purposes. 

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in irrigation, construction, and irrigation maintenance.
  • Must have a valid California driver's license and will be required to drive University vehicles.

Performance Expectations - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be able to carry and use two-way radio in a responsible and professional manner.
  • Must be able to speak and understand English.
  • Must be able to design irrigation systems.
  • Must be capable of producing as-built drawings of installed irrigation systems.
  • Must be able to analyze and diagnose irrigation problems.
  • Must be able to read and understand irrigation and landscape blueprints.
  • Must be able to use the proper type of pipe, fittings, sprinkler heads, valves, wire backflows and controllers used in irrigation systems.
  • Must be able to determine the water needs for various plant materials.
  • Must be able to do routine work under minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to do routine work under minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to perform manual tasks requiring moderate physical strength.
  • Must be physically able to consistently perform job duties.
  • Must be able to maintain good working relations with students, faculty and staff and adhere to the University’s policies and procedures. Understands the importance of customer service and has the ability to follow-up as well as communicate to Facilities Management and the campus clients.
Posting Salary:

 

$23.20 - $31.32 per hour; Excellent Benefits

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position.  Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
