Rooted in social justice, led by compassion, inspired by curiosity, driven by a shared vision.

Here, we combine innovation with introspection, academics with real-world application, and study with social impact.

Our nationally-accredited programs span the realms of leadership, teaching and counseling, both at graduate and undergraduate levels. They're all approached with an emphasis on social justice, multiculturalism and a determination to forge a better world together.

University Description:

The University of San Diego, an engaged and contemporary Catholic institution, was founded by the Diocese of San Diego and the Society of the Sacred Heart in 1949. Governed by an independent board of trustees since 1972, USD remains committed to a liberal arts education grounded in the Catholic intellectual tradition and the pursuit of truth, goodness and beauty. Inspired by this centuries old tradition of Catholic higher education, the University welcomes people of all faith traditions and any, or no, religious background. The future success of USD relies on the contributions of those who seek to foster the development of engaged global citizens and an earnest confrontation of humanity’s urgent challenges.

Detailed Description:

This is a full-time temporary, benefit-based position with an anticipated end date of June 30, 2027. The appointment is renewable at the discretion of the University and dependent upon performance and continued funding.

The Student Success Coordinator plays a crucial role in supporting the mission of BiGI within SOLES. The coordinator will be responsible for implementing strategies to enhance student engagement, academic success, and overall student experience within the BiGI program. This role demands a proactive approach to student support, excellent interpersonal skills, and a strong commitment to advocacy for underrepresented students.

Program Description:

BiGI was created by Dr. Kimberly A. White-Smith, Dean of the School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES) at the University of San Diego (USD), and Pamela Gray Payton, Vice President and Chief Impact and Partnership Officer at the San Diego Foundation, in response to long-standing disparities in educational access, opportunity and outcomes experienced by the Black community in San Diego County. BiGI is open to and serves all students who face disproportionality in educational access and outcomes.

The inequitable distribution of highly qualified teachers, supportive learning environments and essential academic resources has historically limited pathways to educational attainment for too many students. These longstanding gaps served as BiGI’s north star, guiding the creation of a comprehensive model designed to close opportunity disparities for those disproportionately affected.

These disparities often obscure or suppress the inherent genius within children, making it harder for their gifts, talents and possibilities to be fully recognized and nurtured. BiGI exists to illuminate that genius. Our work is to cultivate the brilliance that resides in every young person and to collaborate with school leaders, teachers and caregivers to build new possibilities for the future where these scholars can truly shine.

BiGI prepares sixth through 12th grade students to graduate from high school and pursue college or university — including USD — with the confidence, preparation and skills needed to achieve their academic and career aspirations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Student Engagement and Support: Develop and implement holistic student engagement strategies that foster academic achievement, personal growth, and overall student success. Provide individualized academic and personal support while cultivating an inclusive and supportive environment where students feel empowered to thrive. The Coordinator will maintain a comprehensive student case management system designed to address the unique needs, goals, and challenges of each student within their caseload.
  • Training: Organize and conduct training sessions for POD leaders who facilitate Saturday workshops and Summer Academies. These training sessions should focus on equipping POD leaders with the necessary skills, knowledge, and resources to effectively lead and engage students during these workshops. The coordinator will also monitor the progress and effectiveness of these POD leaders, providing ongoing support and guidance to ensure the success of the Saturday workshops and Summer Academies.
  • Curriculum Development: This role involves the development and enhancement of educational content tailored to BiGI, focusing on programs such as the Summer Academy, monthly Saturday workshops, and college tours. The candidate must be proficient in curriculum design, emphasizing innovation and addressing the educational needs of our underrepresented students. Responsibilities include creating neurodiversity-supportive and socially just curricula, utilizing research-based practices. The role demands effective collaboration with the BiGI team and faculty at the School of Leadership and Educational Sciences to align curricula with the initiative's mission of promoting social justice in diverse educational settings.
  • Program Coordination Assistance: Collaborate with the BiGI team to organize and coordinate student-focused events and workshops. Manage student communications and provide updates on program activities.
  • Data Management and Reporting: Track student participation and progress, maintain accurate student case management records, and contribute to the preparation of reports on student outcomes and program effectiveness.
  • Liaison and Networking: Act as a liaison between students, faculty, and community stakeholders. Facilitate connections and networking opportunities for students within and beyond the university.
  • Feedback and Improvement: Collect and analyze student and caretaker feedback to continuously improve the effectiveness of student support services and the BiGI program.
  • Provide one-on-one and group support to students, addressing their academic and personal needs.
  • Conducting on-site visits to schools to provide assistance and ensure the success of students.
  • Organize and coordinate student events, Saturday workshops, and meetings.
  • Maintain and update student case management records, ensuring confidentiality and accuracy.
  • Collaborate with other staff members and departments to enhance student services.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of student success strategies.
  • Act as a point of contact for student and caretaker inquiries and concerns, providing guidance and referrals as needed.
  • Engage in continuous professional development related to student success.

Background check:  Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.

Degree Verification Requirement: Persons offered employment in this position will be required to provide official education transcripts for degree verification purposes.

Job Requirements:
