The USD Military & Veterans Program provides student-focused services to all USD military-connected students, from their initial consideration of higher education, through services when they are enrolled as students and in their transition to alumni status. USD MVP services enhance military and veteran students’ abilities to achieve their higher education and career goals effectively, from a quality institution, while using their benefits as efficiently as possible.
USD MVP nurtures the academic success and personal growth of all military-connected students. We communicate the value that our military population brings to the campus and the greater community, and in turn, we counter negative stereotyping.

| Detailed Description: |
The role of the Program Coordinator and Military Outreach for the Military & Veterans Program (MVP) is to plan, coordinate, and lead MVP center-related programs around community building and professional development. Through collaboration with various partners on campus and within the community, these events and programming efforts support the university’s Thriving Student Model. They will also manage the communications about our center’s events and resources. The Program Coordinator will represent the Military and Veterans Program at Community College Transfer Fairs and on-base Military Education Fairs. They will be a primary contact for potential military-connected students and help promote the University of San Diego to the military community. The Program Coordinator will support students’ sense of belonging and engage in MVP activities on and off campus, including retreats and graduation ceremonies on weekends and evenings. They will encourage students to examine their complex intersectional individual and community identities concerning self and others. The Program Coordinator will assist in maintaining an inclusive and welcoming space for everyone in the Military and Veterans Center.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Outreach and Awareness:
- Present and promote the University of San Diego to potential military-connected students with on and off-campus partners.
- Attend and represent the Military and Veterans Program at Community College Transfer and Military Education Fairs at local Military Installations.
- Attends University orientations, open houses, and information sessions for potential students on and off campus, often outside regular business hours.
- Meet regularly with prospective undergraduate students and their parents (as requested) to discuss educational opportunities and benefit information.
- Coordinate, establish, and maintain communication networks with appropriate institutions and representatives across organizational lines.
- Work collaboratively with the Offices of Graduate and Undergraduate Admissions, Schools, and the College on military-connected student recruiting initiatives.
- Conducts military awareness training for various stakeholders, including Military-Connected Ally Support Training.
- Visit local Community College Veterans Centers to promote the University of San Diego and the Military and Veterans Program.
Program Coordination and Development:
- Plan, coordinate, and lead MVP-related events.
- Coordinate Social and community-building: Welcome Back BBQ, Breakfast, Winter Holiday Party, Alcala Bazaar.
- Work with campus partners on career development programs for military-connected students.
- Coordinate the Military Graduation Celebration Aboard the USS Midway and the USD Veterans Day Ceremony.
- As a center representative, coordinate and collaborate with on-campus and off-campus organizations and their representatives.
- Plan and assist in coordinating community-building activities to promote and encourage dialogue and meaning-building.
- Coordinate and update marketing and media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, Flikr, newsletter, etc.
- Assists in managing the Military and Veterans Program website.
- Performs and supports qualitative and quantitative techniques to analyze and measure the effectiveness of MVP activities in conjunction with Thriving Student Model Learning Outcomes.
- Assist the Director of the Military and Veterans Program in overseeing the Graduate Assistant.
Torero Connect Advocate for Military-Connected Students:
- Serve as a primary point of contact and advocate for incoming first- and second-year military-connected students
- Support and assist first and second year military-connected students to successfully transition to the University of San Diego through providing guidance on navigating university resources, procedures, and non-academic advising tools.
- Communicate and connect with students through email, text, and social media.
- Following initial contact, meet with assigned students to set actionable goals that the student can complete.
Models Authentic Engagement with Military-Connected Students / Student Supervision:
- In support of students’ sense of belonging, engages in MVP activities on and off campus, including retreats, graduation ceremonies, and weekends and evenings.
- Encourages students to examine their complex intersectional individual and community identities in relation to self and others.
- Serve as an advisor to student organizations as appropriate, focusing on a sense of belonging.
- Provide exceptional customer service to the USD Military and Veterans’ Center visitors.
- As needed, participate in retention teams, other campus committees, and task forces related to military-connected students.
- Additional duties as assigned.
Special Conditions of Employment:
- Full time except for off 1 month off negotiable down to 2 weeks and 2 weeks preferably during the academic breaks.
Background check: Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.
Degree Verification Requirement: Persons offered employment in this position will be required to provide official education transcripts for degree verification purposes.

| Job Requirements: |
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required. A High School diploma and two additional years of work experience may substitute for Bachelor’s degree, at the rate of one year of work experience is equivalent to two years of education.
- Two years of experience in a customer service position required.
- Knowledge of Veteran rules, regulations, and compliance issues is required.
- Veteran or familiarity with the military and those who have served required.
- Must be available and willing to work evenings and weekends to attend outreach events, training, retreats, and programs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Four years of experience in a customer service position preferred.
- Experience directly supervising others developmentally and professionally preferred.
- Experience planning and coordinating events preferred.
Performance Expectations - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- Knowledge of policies and procedures related to Veterans’ benefits programs.
- Ability to meticulously maintain databases and websites, print materials, and produce reports.
- Ability to gather and analyze data relating to the USD Military and Veterans’ Program and USD military students to draw conclusions and make recommendations.
- Strong interest in working at a mission-driven, faith-based institution. The role of the Program Coordinator in working with students and the position's responsibilities are significantly tethered to the university's contemporary Roman Catholic mission.
- Ability to interpret and apply rules and regulations.
- Excellent internal and external customer service skills, including, but not limited to, listening, oral and written communication, and empathy.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills, attention to detail, and follow-up skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues, staff, administrators, students, government agencies, and visitors to the USD Veteran Center.
- Skilled in meeting with students one-on-one or in group settings.
- Ability to provide exceptional customer service.
