Faculty Position Information

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Abilene Christian University is seeking candidates for a College Assistant Professor position for the residential MS SLP program at the ACU Dallas location in Addison Texas. This is a 9-month position [non-tenure] with an expectation of residential teaching of 24 credit hours at the rank of College Assistant Professor – experience in teaching Speech Sound Disorders and early childhood language disorders preferred. This position would also be expected to cross teach via distance education modalities to the Abilene location and the developing online program. The position reports to the Division Director for the Dallas Location of the MS SLP program and the Chair of the Department pf Communication Sciences and Disorders in the College of Health and Behavioral Sciences on the Abilene campus.

Essential Duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions.

A. Provide high-quality, face-to-face instruction, direction and support for students in the classroom environment for assigned courses.
• Plan and execute synchronous class meetings, utilizing learner-centered pedagogies
• Provide rich and timely feedback on student work, being both encouraging and constructively critical.
• Provide timely and helpful answers to students’ inquiries regarding course material or academic matters.
• Be available for meetings with students one-on-one or in group settings and hold a minimum of six office hours per week.
B. Alert Division Director Department Chair to any student issues. This includes performance issues (e.g. failing grades, failing to turn in assignments, etc.) and policy violation issues (e.g. plagiarism).
C. Comply with all pertinent policies and procedures outlined in Abilene Christian University’s Handbook, Faculty Guidelines, and those specified by ACU’s College of Health and Behavioral Services.
D. Complete program and ACU faculty training and provide credentialing/records updates as required.
E. Other duties, as assigned and directed by Department Chair.

Physical Demands:

• Work is performed in a classroom and in front of a computer; must have the ability to move about a large room with tables/desks, use the computer and remain stationary for long periods of time.
• Manage conversations in person, online and by telephone.
• Work well under pressure and manage stress well.
• Communicate clearly: speak, read, write, and hear clearly to perform essential functions.

Qualifications

Professional
• A doctoral degree (preferred) in Communication Sciences & Disorders, Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited institution.
• ASHA certification and Texas State License in Speech-Language Pathology are required.
• 1 year teaching experience at the graduate level in speech-language pathology - Speech Sound Disorders and Early Childhood Language Disorders preferred.
• Clinical expertise/additional academic preparation in content area assigned to teach.
• Computer literate in software and internet-based applications.

• Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
• Ability to view and manage roles and responsibilities in relation to larger mission, goals and perspective of the university.
• Collaborative nature, with the ability to build consensus.
• Outstanding organizational and project management skills with the ability to consistently meet deadlines.
• Self-motivated and solves problems, asking for input and initiating solutions as appropriate and reasonable.
• Capacity to quickly learn new software applications.
• Willingness to receive additional training and/or faculty mentoring.
• Ability to demonstrate good judgment when interacting with students, other faculty and staff.
