Overview:

The School of Communications at Quinnipiac University seeks a dynamic, imaginative, and innovative storyteller to join our Journalism department as it expands its expertise in data visualization and social media reporting. The department seeks a colleague skilled in the use of data analysis and visualization to bring complicated stories to life across multiple platforms, but particularly social media. This position is for an assistant professor rank, either on the tenure-track, or non-tenure, teaching faculty track, and will begin in August 2025. Candidates who have experience using AI / AR / VR in reporting, and/or experience in podcasting, or other emerging media will also receive strong consideration. With a primary focus on teaching, our School prioritizes forward-looking, cutting-edge skills and knowledge, combined with a contagious passion for the field.

Professors in Quinnipiac’s Journalism department are committed to the academic, personal and professional success of every student from day one. We take pride in preparing the next generation of journalists to write, shoot and edit like a pro on whatever platform they choose: digital, video / broadcast, mobile, social media, podcast, photojournalism, or print media. Many alumni have a strong presence in local media and work at national organizations such as CBS News, ABC News, ESPN, Gannett, the Oxygen channel, Major League Baseball Productions, NBC Universal, NBC News, CNN and Fox News. Students also acquire real-world experience right on campus by working on the Quinnipiac Chronicle newspaper and website, the Q30 campus TV station, WQAQ-FM student radio, and with the Quinnipiac Bobcats Sports Network.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and teach new and existing courses in the journalism department and School of Communications that deal with topics such as social media reporting, data reporting and visualization, the use of AI / AR / VR in reporting, podcasting, visual journalism, or related topics.
  • Serve as a subject-matter expert within the department, across the School and University, and with external audiences and partners, including academic scholarly venues as well as professional media organizations and associations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to mentoring and advising students in academic, professional, and co-curricular matters and pursuits.  
  • All candidates must be able to achieve excellence in teaching (tenure-track faculty teach a 3/3 course load, and non-tenure track faculty teach a 4/4 course load.)
  • All faculty are also required to actively participate in departmental, school, and university affairs, as well as recruitment and alumni relations activities.
  • Tenure track appointments will require the pursuit of an active scholarly and/or creative works agenda (publications in academic journals, books, book chapters, monographs, etc. and/or high-level creative works such as documentaries, podcasts, published mass market articles, etc.) as defined by Quinnipiac University, the School of Communications and the Department of Journalism.

Education Requirements:

  • A minimum of a master’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field is required.  
  • An earned doctoral degree from an appropriately accredited college or university is preferred.

Qualifications:

  • At least four to six years of significant professional experience in journalism is required. Candidates with demonstrated professional experience in visual journalism, social media reporting, using data / data visualization in reporting, or using AI / AR / VR in reporting, will receive the strongest consideration.
  • Previous higher-ed teaching experience (full or part-time) is strongly preferred.
  • Comfort with new technologies and incorporating them into the classroom, as well as adoption of new campus systems and educational platforms is required.
  • Candidates with strong journalism industry connections and the ability to connect students with outside mentors and internships are also strongly preferred.
