The Position: Assistant Tenure-Track Professor (Costume Design)

Salary: Salary commensurate with education and experience. (Anticipated hiring range: $70,000 - $ 75,000 per year).

Minimum Qualifications:

The minimum education requirement for appointment to this position is a terminal degree in Theatre or Theatre Design (or professional equivalent which includes a Bachelor of Arts degree and at least 3 years of professional experience). Candidates nearing completion of the terminal degree may be considered; however, all requirements for conferral of the degree must be met no later than the start date of the position.

Responsibilities:

This tenure-track position carries responsibilities in the areas of teaching costume design, costume crafts and make-up design as well as regular production design assignments in these areas.  Faculty mentor students in the design and fabrication of costumes, makeup, hair, and costume props for Theatre productions and other school collaborations. Faculty collaborate with the costume shop, which is currently supported by 1.5 staff members. Together, the faculty and staff share responsibility of managing the costume shop's equipment and inventory, budgets, and costume stock. Attendance at regular production meetings and some rehearsals is expected. Faculty collaborate with staff members in the costume shop with completion of designs, supervision of student workers, production teams and class crews, etc. Other responsibilities include advising, recruiting, curriculum development, professional affiliations as appropriate, the development of a record of scholarly achievement and/or a professional design portfolio, the demonstration of outstanding university teaching, and other duties as assigned. Course assignments typically include General Education and/or Majors classes within the candidate’s teaching ability. Courses might include Social Justice in Theatre, Children’s Literature in Performance, Introduction to Theatre, Foundations of Design, Text/Script analysis, Performance of Identify (gender/race and sexuality), Theatre History, Stage Management, Crew Practicum Supervision, World Theatre, Directing, and any other classes within the candidate’s expertise and interest. Teaching assignments are based upon qualifications of the individual and the needs of the department.

The Department:

The CSU, Chico Music and Theatre Department offers a BA in Music (options in Music Education and Applied Music), a BA in Music Industry and Technology (options in Music Industry and Recording Arts), a BA in Theatre Arts, a BFA in Musical Theatre, and minors in music, theatre, and dance. There are approximately 350 majors across the department. The 10 Tenured/Tenure Track and 16 lecturer faculty are engaged in a wide variety of music and theatre activities, producing 4-5 theatrical productions per year, dance concerts every other year, and concerts from two bands, two jazz bands, two choirs, and various small ensembles. The department is accredited by NAST (National Association of Schools of Theatre).
