Instructional Student Assistant Tutor Pool

POSITION

The Department of Human Communication Studies Tutoring Program at CSU Fullerton invites applications for its Instructional Student Assistant Tutor Pool.

We welcome applications from current CSUF graduate/undergraduate students to provide tutoring in the following subject areas:  

  • HCOM 308: Research Methods (statistics)
  • HCOM 300: Introduction to Research in Speech Communication
  • HCOM /100102 Public Speaking
  • HCOM 235: Essentials of Argumentation

Duties:

We are looking for current undergraduate and graduate students who are highly dependable, possess excellent communications skills, and able to work well with others. As a tutor, you will be expected to perform the following duties:

  • Help students make academic progress and achieve a better understanding of specific subject material while promoting independent learning.
  • Provide academic assistance and support to undergraduate students individually or in a group setting.
  • Establish and maintain rapport with the assigned students.
  • Maintain a punctual and reliable work schedule, attend all class sessions as directed by the instructor of record, and maintain office hours.
  • Must attend all tutor training and meetings.
  • Team up with other tutors in review sessions; and assist where needed.
  • Serve as an exemplary role model to students.
  • May perform other tasks as assigned: virtual “front desk” customer service; prepare reports; marketing the program; connecting with faculty; occasionally promote service via classroom presentations.

Schedule:  Schedule is determined by supervisor and schedule to work is from September 1,2024 to May 30, 2025.   

This is a pool of Instructional Student Assistant for the department to draw on as necessary.

APPOINTMENTS FROM THE POOL ARE TEMPORARY AND OFTEN MADE JUST PRIOR TO THE START OF THE ACADEMIC TERM. APPLICANTS MAY BE OFFERED EMPLOYMENT ON VERY SHORT NOTICE. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Candidates must be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student.
  • Candidates should demonstrate their ability to interact and work effectively with a wide and culturally diverse range of students, including first-generation college students
  • Possess excellent communication skills and ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to build strong and positive relationships with students.
  • Maturity, respect for students, and ability to listen with patience and have an open mind.
  • Previous tutoring experience with students is a plus.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have earned a B+ or better in the respective courses or otherwise demonstrate subject matter competence
  • Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
  • Knowledge of subject matter

COMPENSATION

All Instructional Student Assistant appointments are made under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the CSU system and the United Auto Workers.  Initial appointments are for one semester only.

Classification Range: $17.01 - $22.70 per hour
Anticipated hiring range depending on qualification, not to exceed $18.00

Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, the current Annual Security Report (ASR) is available for viewing at: https://hr.fullerton.edu/risk-management/clery-act/. This report contains the current security and safety-related policy statements, emergency preparedness and evacuation information, crime prevention and sexual assault prevention information, and drug and alcohol prevention programming. The ASR also contains statistics of Clery Act crimes for California State University, Fullerton for the last three (3) calendar years. Paper copies are available upon request at the CSUF Police Department.

 

Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire Safety Report (AFSR)
In addition, pursuant to the Higher Education Opportunity Act, the AFSR is also available at https://hr.fullerton.edu/risk-management/clery-act/. The purpose of this report is to disclose statistics for fires that occurred within California State University, Fullerton housing facilities for the last three (3) calendar years, and to distribute fire safety policies and procedures intended to promote safety on campus. A paper copy of the AFSR is available upon request by contacting the Housing Office located at The Housing & Residential Engagement Main Office.
