| Job Summary | Note: Anticipated start date of Early December 2025 This position, under the general supervision of the EH&S Director, or designee, encompasses the University's compliance programs in: occupational health & safety, environmental compliance, hazardous materials/waste, biosafety, radiation, and DEA regulated chemicals. The incumbent provides support in all campus areas that use, handle, or dispose of hazardous materials including chemicals, biohazards/medical waste, and radioactive materials. Conducts inspections of emergency equipment including eyewash stations, safety showers and fire extinguishers. Works in laboratories, hazardous waste storage yard, and other campus locations assisting in the pick-up of spent hazardous chemicals, biohazardous materials, and radionuclides. Is involved in hazard communication, safety trainings, safety inspections, chemical inventory, chemical spill response, etc. Incumbent will be trained to safely work with all aforementioned materials and assigned appropriate personal protective equipment. Incumbent is required to attend an off campus 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training course to become certified in the management of hazardous chemical waste and safely respond to emergencies. Incumbent will be required to drive university-owned vehicles on and off campus. Other duties may include, but are not limited to data entry, filing, answering phones, greeting customers, making safety signs and labels, posting health & safety information, assisting with fall protection on roofs, reviewing and distributing PPE and sanitization supplies, and completing assigned projects by EHS staff, as needed. Radiation Safety Program:Provide support to the Radiation Safety Officer in the administration of the campus Radiation Safety program. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
 1. Collect and distribute medical monitoring badges, rings and/or other dosimetry devices.
 2. Operate the liquid scintillation counter, and other radiation detection devices, under the direction of the Radiation Safety Officer.
 3. Inspect and monitor areas where radioactive materials are used.
 4. Assist in maintaining inventories of radioactive materials and supplies.
 5. Receive and inspect shipments of radioactive materials, log them in, and deliver to the principal investigators.
 6. Collect spent radioisotopes from laboratories.
 7. Respond to radioactive spills, assist in managing the spill, and decontaminate the affected area(s).
 8. Perform other duties as assigned.
 Biosafety Program:Provide support to the Biosafety Officer in the administration of the campus biosafety program. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
 1. Help monitor biohazardous waste disposal activities and assist in proper pick up, packaging, labeling, and disposal of biohazardous wastes from labs, Student Health Center, and other areas that may generate medical or biohazardous materials.
 2. Respond to spills involving biohazardous materials, assist in managing the spill, and decontaminate the affected area(s).
 3. Perform other duties as assigned.
 Hazardous Waste Management Program:Provide support to the Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) and Assistant CHO/Hazardous Materials Specialist in the administration of the campus hazardous materials management program. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
 1. Barcode hazardous chemicals on campus and enter them in the campus chemical inventory database. Reconcile chemicals at least annually to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
 2. Assist in inspection of laboratories and other campus locations for the accumulation of hazardous waste. Identify the waste by hazard class and ensure appropriate labeling, segregation, and storage of the material.
 3. Collect hazardous waste from laboratories and other campus locations and transport to the Chemical Storage Area.
 4. Assist with characterizing hazardous chemicals within the Chemical Storage Area by hazard class and then consolidate the hazardous chemicals by compatibility.
 5. Assist with the implementation of the hazard communication program. Ensure chemical users have access to safety data sheets (SDS) and that chemicals are properly labeled within the laboratories and other areas on campus to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
 6. Maintain HAZWOPER training and certification and help perform emergency response functions as necessary.
 7. Respond to hazardous chemical spills, assist in managing the spill, and decontaminate the affected area(s).
 8. Perform other duties as assigned.
 Environmental Compliance:Provide support to the Environmental Compliance Specialist in the administration of the campus environmental compliance program. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
 1. Collect data for the preparation of regulatory reports and records as required by local, state, and federal regulations to support the efforts of the EHS Office to comply with applicable environmental regulations.
 2. Assist departments with chemical inventories as required by regulatory authorities.
 3. Conduct basic environmental monitoring activities; maintain the calibration of monitoring equipment; schedule services as necessary.
 4. Assist in a variety of safety and environmental inspections and audits.
 5. Perform other duties as assigned.
 Office Reception1. Greet visitors and respond to routine questions.
 2. Answer phones and take messages.
 3. Assist in filing documents.
 4. Perform data entry.
 5. Perform other duties as assigned.
 Other Duties1. Perform monthly inspections of safety showers, eyewash stations, and fire extinguishers, and other campus safety equipment. Record findings and conduct follow-up inspections as needed.
 2. Assist with training faculty, staff, and students on various health and safety topics.
 3. Attend safety committee meetings and take minutes.
 4. Provide backup assistance to all EHS programs, as necessary.
 5. Support occupational safety & health (OSH) program in fall protection, confined space, ladder safety, etc.
 6. Review requests for PPE and sanitization supplies and distribute, as necessary.
 7. Operate university vehicles on and off campus.
 8. Perform other duties as assigned.
 REQUIRED: Ability to lift 25-90 lbs. with assistance Valid California Driver’s License with a good driving record

 Availability for 40-hour training (may fall on weekends)
 Commit a minimum of two years to the student assistant position
