POSITION

The Department of Biological Science at CSU Fullerton invites applications for its Teaching Associate Pool.

We welcome applications from current CSUF graduate students in the Biological Science Department (or in a related graduate program) to teach in the following lab classes:  

  • BIOL101L Elements of Biology Lab
  • BIOL151 Cellular and Molecular Biology Lab
  • BIOL152 Evolution and Organismal Biology Lab*
  • BIOL191B Integrated Human Anatomy and Physiology Biology Lab
  • BIOL202 Microbiology for Nursing Lab
  • BIOL253L Cellular and Molecular Biology Skills Lab
  • BIOL254L Research Skills in Ecology and Organismal Biology Lab*
  • BIOL302 General Microbiology Lab
  • BIOL310L Human Physiology Lab
  • BIOL361 Human Anatomy Lab
  • BIOL362 Mammalian Physiology Lab
  • BIOL424 Immunology Lab

*These labs have weekend field trips.

A Teaching Associate (TA) is a CSUF graduate student who is appointed part-time, usually to teach credit-bearing in person lab courses.  Responsibility for a course will be vested in the TA under the direct supervision of an appropriate faculty member.  Teaching assignments may include multi-section coordinated courses, in which TAs must abide by all coordinated course policies, including the conditions contained in the general syllabi, Department, and CSU policies.

Duties may include the following:

  • Providing classroom instruction
  • Preparing course materials and administering assignments to students
  • Administering examinations/practicums, grading student work and otherwise assessing student performance, and determining course grades
  • Returning student work and submitting grades on time
  • Attending all lab preparatory weekly meetings.
  • Participating in all class field trips.
  • Holding scheduled office hours
  • Diligently checking emails and responding within 24 hours
  • Meeting the expectations of TAs and for the specific course, as established by the Department and supervising faculty member
  • Complete all required training

The successful Teaching Associate application and interview will show strong evidence of:

  • Content knowledge of the various areas listed above
  • Spoken English communication skills
  • Written English communication skills
  • Computer skills
  • Professional presentation and demeanor

This is a pool of Teaching Associate for the department to draw on as necessary.

APPOINTMENTS FROM THE POOL ARE TEMPORARY AND OFTEN MADE JUST PRIOR TO THE START OF THE ACADEMIC TERM. APPLICANTS MAY BE OFFERED EMPLOYMENT ON VERY SHORT NOTICE. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Admitted to CSUF and currently enrolled graduate student at CSUF in good academic standing.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biological Science, Biological Sciences or a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact and work effectively with a culturally diverse population of students, including first-generation college students.
  • Able to work in the US.  International students who are just entering the country for the first time in late August or January and do not have a Social Security number will need to wait until the following term for employment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently enrolled graduate student in the Biological Science Department in good academic standing at CSUF
  • Knowledge of the subject matter of the course(s) to which the individual is assigned
  • Ability to instruct and evaluate students effectively
  • For the initial appointment, evidence of satisfactory achievement in previous academic work (transcripts)

COMPENSATION

All Teaching Associate appointments are made under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the CSU system and the United Auto Workers.  Appointments are semester basis. 

Classification Range: $3,245 to $7,598 per month
Anticipated hiring range depending on qualifications, not to exceed $5,200

The full-time monthly base salaries indicated above are prorated to the time base assigned.

Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, the current Annual Security Report (ASR) is available for viewing at: https://hr.fullerton.edu/risk-management/clery-act/. This report contains the current security and safety-related policy statements, emergency preparedness and evacuation information, crime prevention and sexual assault prevention information, and drug and alcohol prevention programming. The ASR also contains statistics of Clery Act crimes for California State University, Fullerton for the last three (3) calendar years. Paper copies are available upon request at the CSUF Police Department.

Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire Safety Report (AFSR)
In addition, pursuant to the Higher Education Opportunity Act, the AFSR is also available at https://hr.fullerton.edu/risk-management/clery-act/. The purpose of this report is to disclose statistics for fires that occurred within California State University, Fullerton housing facilities for the last three (3) calendar years, and to distribute fire safety policies and procedures intended to promote safety on campus.
