Duties and Responsibilities |
Working primarily independently with minimal supervision, the Business Intelligence Architect serves as the campus technical expert and strategic leader for enterprise data analytics architecture, governance, business intelligence solutions, and institutional reporting systems. Develops and executes enterprise data analytics strategies aligned with university goals and objectives and provides consultative leadership in the conceptualization, integration, implementation, and optimization of advanced analytics systems and tools. Leads high-impact campus-wide analytics initiatives and collaborates with executive leadership, campus stakeholders, and cross-functional IT teams to establish enterprise data governance frameworks, reporting standards, and strategic analytics roadmaps. The position serves as the primary architect and subject matter expert for the university’s enterprise data warehouse, cloud analytics ecosystem, and institutional business intelligence platforms. The Business Intelligence Architect is responsible for the design, implementation, integration, security, governance, and continuous improvement of enterprise analytics solutions including Extract, Transform, Load (ETL)/Extract, Load, Transform (ELT) pipelines, advanced data models, statistical analyses, predictive analytics capabilities, dashboards, and institutional reporting systems. The role exercises expert judgment in evaluating emerging technologies, recommending enterprise analytics strategies, and implementing scalable, secure, and sustainable data solutions. Leads and directs data analytics developers and project teams, establishes development standards and governance protocols, oversees enterprise analytics project planning and execution, and ensures compliance with university policies, data governance regulations, accessibility requirements, cybersecurity standards, and CSU systemwide initiatives. The Business Intelligence Architect works with a high degree of autonomy and provides strategic guidance to campus leadership regarding short-term and long-term data analytics initiatives, institutional effectiveness strategies, and enterprise reporting capabilities. Other duties as assigned. |

Essential Qualifications |
Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a related field and five years of relevant experience. Additional experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. Working primarily independently with minimal supervision, utilizes expert knowledge of data analytics systems and organizational needs to develop and deliver data analytics strategies and solutions aligned with organization goals and objectives. Collaborates with cross-functional teams and leads data analytics systems projects. Problems are highly complex and may require the creation of new procedures and techniques. Serves as a consultative expert in the conceptualization and implementation of data analytics systems and tools. Decision-making often requires expert knowledge on data analytics design best practices; in-depth knowledge of university and information technology policies, guidelines, and protocols; as well as an understanding of university strategies and goals. Work often requires a high degree of technical expertise, persuasion, and leadership. Expert knowledge of data manipulation, transformation, and analysis using advanced programming libraries or frameworks. Expert knowledge of data modeling, statistical analysis, machine learning, and optimization techniques. Expert in leading and executing complex and high impact data analytics projects and initiatives. Expert in data operations standards. Expertise in data security architectures, ensuring regulatory compliance, and ability to recommend and implement data governance strategies. Expert knowledge and skill in applying and interpreting technology policies, protocols, and standards, as well as data governance best practices. As appropriate, recommends data governance protocols and strategies. Expert project planning, organizational, and time management skills to plan, organize, prioritize, and manage multiple projects. Expert communication and interpersonal skills to develop and drive strategic data analytics initiatives and persuade management and cross-functional stakeholders. Expert in independently applying advanced judgment to solve difficult and complex problems and issues. Expert skill in mentoring and overseeing the work of other data analytics developers. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to complete the background check satisfactorily may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position. |

Preferred Qualifications |
Possess expert knowledge of enterprise data analytics principles, methodologies, technologies, and best practices, including advanced data modeling, data warehousing, statistical analysis, predictive analytics, machine learning, optimization techniques, and cloud-based analytics architectures. The position requires extensive expertise in the design and implementation of scalable enterprise data solutions, ETL/ELT frameworks, automation pipelines, and advanced reporting and visualization systems. The successful candidate must demonstrate expert-level proficiency in data manipulation, cleansing, transformation, validation, integration, and analysis using advanced programming languages, scripting tools, and enterprise analytics platforms. Possess thorough knowledge of data governance methodologies, metadata management, data quality standards, security frameworks, privacy regulations, and institutional compliance requirements necessary to support enterprise analytics environments. Ability to independently research, analyze, conceptualize, and implement innovative data analytics solutions to address highly complex institutional, operational, and strategic business needs. Ability to translate functional and strategic business requirements into technical specifications, enterprise data models, and actionable reporting solutions that support executive decision-making and institutional effectiveness initiatives. Expert project leadership and organizational skills with the ability to lead large-scale, high-impact analytics initiatives involving multiple stakeholders, competing priorities, and complex technical dependencies are expected. Demonstrated ability to develop strategic analytics roadmaps, establish project timelines, coordinate cross-functional technical teams, oversee implementation activities, and ensure alignment with university objectives, technology standards, and governance requirements. Exceptional communication, presentation, consultation, and interpersonal skills are required to effectively collaborate with executive leadership, faculty, staff, technical teams, vendors, and campus stakeholders. Demonstrate the ability to present technical concepts and strategic recommendations clearly and persuasively, facilitate consensus among various stakeholder groups, and influence the adoption of enterprise analytics strategies, governance standards, and best practices. Have expert leadership and mentoring abilities, including the capability to provide technical direction, guidance, training, and oversight to other data analytics developers and project team members. Ability to foster a collaborative, service-oriented, and innovative work environment while promoting continuous improvement, operational excellence, data integrity, security, accessibility, and compliance across enterprise analytics initiatives. Experience with enterprise cloud analytics ecosystems and business intelligence technologies such as AWS analytics services, SQL, R, PySparc, AWS Glue, AWS S3, AWS Athena, AWS QuickSight (AWS Quick), AWS Redshift, Oracle DB, Tableau, Apache SuperSet, and AWS Cloud Formation, and related enterprise reporting and visualization platforms is highly desirable. Experience working within a higher education environment, particularly within the California State University system, and familiarity with Oracle PeopleSoft Campus Solutions and institutional reporting practices are preferred. Strong knowledge of accessibility standards, cybersecurity principles, compliance requirements, and enterprise documentation standards is also highly desirable. |
