Position Description

Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Manager for Architectural Trades, the Lead Locksmith is responsible for providing lead work direction to a small group or crew of skilled Locksmiths, other skilled crafts workers, and their assistants as well as the planning, design and oversight of the implementation and maintenance of a campus-wide master lock and key program, as well as performing skilled locksmith work. 

Department Summary

Facilities Management and Development (FMD), a unit within the Administration and Finance Division (AFD), is responsible for the planning, design, construction, operations, maintenance, and repair of university facilities, grounds, and infrastructure. FMD consists of five critical and interdependent support departments, including Customer & Business Services; Energy, Utilities, & Sustainability; Environmental Health & Safety; Facilities Planning & Capital Projects; and Facilities Operations. Key Qualifications

  • Provide lead work direction to and work with a small group or crew performing locksmith or related work including planning, scheduling and assigning work.
  • Determine material, equipment and staffing needs for projects.
  • Serve as the campus expert on all matters pertaining to locks, locking systems and fastening devices and consult with campus administrators on the types of systems and devices most appropriate for new facilities and major replacements, as well as on the development of a key and access control policy.
  • Maintain records, retrieve data and prepare standard reports related to work performed using manual and computerized record-keeping systems.
  • Oversee a locksmith shop, key shop, and campus master key system.

Education and Experience

  • Any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a locksmith’s apprenticeship program AND two or more years of experience as a journey-level locksmith that included lead work coordination responsibilities and training in master key systems.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, DEGREES, CREDENTIALS:  Must possess license or certification as a locksmith. Possession of a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.  This position may require the ability to obtain AHERA Supervisor certification for asbestos related work and Cal/OSHA Lead training as well as the ability to wear respiratory protection. 

Salary and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Range: $75,768 - $85,482 per year

Classification Range: $73,812 - $95,304 per year
