Position Description

Job Summary

Reporting to and working under the general supervision of the department chair in Women’s, Gender, and Queer Studies, this position provides full administrative and clerical support to faculty, staff, and students; it also engages with the general public on behalf of the department, as needed. The incumbent is responsible for a variety of administrative and specialized office functions to support the department/programs. This position requires a detailed understanding of numerous policies and procedures in the Department, College, and University. Relatedly, because the department chair position comes up for reappointment every three years, the person in this position provides continuity for these various complex departmental operations, as well as college and university processes and policies.

Department Summary

The Women’s Gender & Queer Studies (WGQS) Department, in the College of Liberal Arts (CLA), administers two minors, in Queer Studies (QS) and Women’s & Gender Studies (WGS). In addition to supporting approximately 60 minors across both programs from majors across the university, most WGQS courses also satisfy general education, United States Cultural Pluralism (USCP), and/or breadth requirements for Cal Poly students. The department also has a proposal for a new BA program under review.

Key Qualifications

  • Excellent communication skills. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner orally, in writing, and electronically.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, online systems, Internet as well as online meeting programs, online calendaring, and email.
  • Ability to use and quickly learn existing and/or new office support equipment, technology systems, and software packages. 
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to independently set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines. Ability to adapt to changing policies, procedures, and technology.
  • Working knowledge of budget policies and procedures.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or its equivalent. Type 45 wpm. 
  • Four years of general office support or technical experience.
  • Training at a vocational school or full-time college education may be substituted for up to three years of the required experience on a year-to-year basis.

Salary and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,710 - $4,347 per month

This position is paid under the 11/12 pay plan, where the salary for 11 months is distributed over 12 months. The salary will be received every month. The incumbent will have one month off every year (with pay, benefits, and vacation/sick leave accrual continuing through the month off). The one month off will be July.

Classification Range: $3,710 - $5,405 per month

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Anticipated Hiring Range referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Classification Range may be broader than what the University anticipates paying for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).

Supplemental Information
