Phlebotomist

Compensation and Benefits


Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $3,373 - $3,531 per month 

Full CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,373 - $5,589 per month

  • This is a full-time (equivalent to 40 hours per week), probationary, non-exempt position.
  • This position is on an 11/12 Pay Plan which is equivalent to eleven months of salary distributed over a 12-month period.  The scheduled month off will be June.
  • Initial appointment will be on a 12 month pay plan (salary range: $3,680 – $3,852 per month) from the date of hire through the end of the July 2025 pay period.  At the beginning of the August 2025 pay period, the appointment will change to an 11/12 pay plan whereby the incumbent will work 11 months per year and are paid 12 months (11/12) with each subsequent June off.

 

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Job Summary

 

Under the supervision of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Physician, the Phlebotomist and Clinical Laboratory Assistant supports overall laboratory operations, performs phlebotomy, and basic and CLIA-waived laboratory testing for use in the diagnosis and treatment of medical problems.  The phlebotomist maintains the orderly condition of the laboratory, and assists with other laboratory duties, quality assurance, and reports.  In addition, serves as receptionist in a combined laboratory/x-ray reception space and facilitates patient flow for both laboratory and x-ray procedures. 

 

Key Qualifications

  • Ability to collect required specimens for and perform assigned CLIA-waived testing with required attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Perform phlebotomy using the appropriate equipment including venipuncture and capillary puncture.
  • Use applicable equipment and materials in performing laboratory tests and use applicable automated systems for maintaining and tracking laboratory and patient records.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality as required by applicable state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff; and be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients.

Education and Experience

  • Incumbents must possess a high school diploma or equivalent and six months of related experience in a healthcare setting or equivalent combination of education and experience. Post-secondary coursework in clinical laboratory assisting or completion of an accredited clinical laboratory assisting program is highly preferred.  

     

    Certification:

    Incumbents must possess and maintain valid certification as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I, as defined by the California Department of Health Services, which permits the incumbent to perform skin punctures and venipuncture. 

     

    Phlebotomy certification requires: 

    A high school diploma or equivalent; and

    Completion of required hours of classroom instruction and practical training or equivalent training and experience depending on date of entry to the field; and 

    Passing an examination as required by Laboratory Field Services under the California Department of Public Health.
