Position Summary

The incumbent in this position provides technical support to all Microbiology: allied health, diversity, pathogenic, food, and mycology related disciplines in the Department of Biological Sciences.
 
Working independently, the incumbent oversees the Microbiology Prep Lab. This facility procures, maintains, and manages all materials, including maintenance of microbial culture stocks, disposition of biohazardous and chemical wastes utilized and generated in the above-mentioned courses, and serves approximately 16-18 laboratory sections/week each semester.
 
Responsibilities also include 1) providing support for courses assigned to the position, 2) coordinating the maintenance and repair of equipment for the Microbiology Prep Lab and assigned courses and 3) provides training and oversees Microbiology Prep Lab student assistants, graduate student assistants and work study students. Autoclave training, maintenance, and problem solving.

FLSA: Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime compensation) 

Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,608 - $4,800 per month, commensurate with education, experience, skills, and training

Department Information 

The Department of Biological Sciences at California State University, Sacramento is one of the largest programs on campus, with approximately 1,600 undergraduate and 60 Master’s students, 30 permanent faculty, approximately 45 temporary faculty, and 12 technical and administrative support team members. Most of the Department is found in the new Tschannen Science Complex, and courses cover the range of biology, including evolution, microbiology, molecular biology, cellular biology, genetics, anatomy, physiology, ecology, and conservation biology.

Minimum Qualifications 

Knowledge of the principles of performing support services; knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques related to the discipline and the curriculum; knowledge of the materials and supplies in the curriculum and the curriculum and their uses.

Ability to plan, organize, and schedule activities; ability to operate technical equipment related to the discipline; ability to maintain records; ability to adjust and perform simple maintenance of technical and scientific equipment.

Experience:

Equivalent to three years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to the area to which assigned.

Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

or

Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for two years of the required experience.

Required Qualifications 

  1. Ability to apply fundamental microbiological principles, methods, and techniques related to microbiology laboratory courses.
  2. Knowledge of the use of materials and supplies in biological sciences laboratory courses.
  3. Ability to adhere to and apply safety guidelines regarding laboratory safety, biohazardous waste storage and disposal, and hazardous waste.
  4. Experience with or demonstrated ability to prepare, culture, freeze, and recover prokaryotic cells
  5. Experience working with microbiology and molecular biology techniques used in teaching laboratories, including but not limited to aseptic technique, preparation of solutions, culture media, plates, glassware, and consumables, PCR, and DNA isolation
  6. Knowledge of the proper storage of materials and supplies used in biological sciences laboratory courses.
  7. Ability ordering and budgeting for laboratory supplies used in specific laboratory exercises and protocols.
  8. Ability to provide lead work direction and coordinate student assistants, teaching assistants and/or volunteers in the preparation of materials.
  9. Ability to properly operate equipment related to the job, including (but not limited to) Microscopes (compound, stereomicroscope), analytical balances, pH meters, micropipettes, spectrophotometer, centrifuges, autoclaves, water baths, incubators, laminar flow hood, and other standard laboratory equipment.
  10. Ability to work independently and follow written protocols.
  11. Experience using basic computer software including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Outlook.
  12. Ability to plan, organize, and schedule work-related activities, including working with undergraduate and graduate student schedules
  13. Commitment to maintaining a welcoming and inclusive work environment with diverse colleagues and constituents including faculty, students, staff, and members of the community

Preferred Qualifications 

  1. B.S. or B.A. degree in biology or related field, and coursework in microbiology; M.S. or M.A. in biology or related discipline with coursework in microbiology.
  2. Experience working or assisting in teaching laboratories.
  3. Experience working with diverse student populations.
  4. Ability to problem solve and think critically, often under time constraints.
