$15,000.00 - $17,500.00 Per Month ($180,000.00 - $210,000.00 Annually)

Position Summary

The Chief of Staff (COS) advises the President in advancing the university by fulfilling a wide variety of complex and highly sensitive executive and administrative duties. The incumbent must have an in- depth knowledge of the university and maintain active involvement in issues of importance to the president and university, including state budget appropriations, government and community relations, legislative initiatives and campus climate. The COS also supervises the Office of Government and Community Relations, Communications for the President, Tribal Relations and serves as senior advisor for government and community relations and Tribal Relations assisting the president in prioritizing and maximizing relationships and partnerships. The COS also supports campus time, place and manner work. The COS serves as a member of the president's cabinet and reports directly to the president.

Position Information

- Assists the president in establishing priorities, identifying and evaluating important issues, and developing policy and process recommendations. Evaluates complex issues and make assessments in order to advise and assist the president on appropriate courses of action.

- Responsible for overseeing the successful daily operations of the Office of the President.

- Works collaboratively across divisions to facilitate the implementation of university initiatives. Directs the Office of Government & Community Relations and Tribal Relations.

- Ensures the alignment of the president's calendar with established priorities and presidential objectives.

- Manage and develop the office’s budgets and maintain records. Review expenditures, budget transfers, and international travel for the University.

- In collaboration with the president and the Director of Communications and AVP for Strategic Communications, assists with presidential communications advising the president on communication and advocacy strategies, including establishing priorities for presidential communication, ensuring consistency of presidential messaging.

- Provides coordination with other senior campus officers on virtually any matter of interest to the president, including monitoring, analysis, and advice on policy development and implementation.

- Effectively communicate with and influence high-level and diverse contacts inside and outside of the CSU        system. Serve as the President’s liaison and as appropriate, act on behalf of the President. 

- Assists in coordinating special events including convocation and commencement.

- Coordinate the demands on President’s time and in collaboration with the Executive Assistant to the President to ensure smooth and efficient operation of the Office of the President.

- Provides advice to the president regarding appointments to standing university committees, task forces, and search committees.

- Coordinates special initiatives as determined by the president including advocacy campaigns and outreach efforts. Monitors issues of importance to the president including campus climate, the state budget, NAGPRA, Seal of Excelencia Initiatives and legislative initiatives that affect the academic program.

- Represents the president to internal and external constituencies and serves as presidential appointee on myriad committees and boards.

- Collaborates with diverse stakeholders to actively engage the campus community in addressing issues related to campus climate.

- Serves as the Policy Group Liaison during Emergency Operations Center actions.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field, with at least five years of professional experience in university leadership.

Knowledge, Skills

  • Demonstrated experience in external relations and Public Affairs
  • Demonstrated professional success in roles with progressively more responsibility.
  • Knowledge of university administration within traditional academic structures.
  • Working knowledge of the CSU
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills; adept at communicating via social and other emerging media.
  • Interpersonal skills which engender trust and effective working relationships with a wide range of individuals.
  • A personal commitment to shared governance and social justice.
  • Ability to operate with poise in challenging situations, or in response to difficult individuals.
  • High energy and enthusiasm for serving the campus community and the community at large.
  • Operates with a high level of discretion, discernment, and sensitivity to the unique demands of the Executive office.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (such as a graduate or professional degree) in an appropriate field, with at least three years of professional experience in university leadership.
  • Substantial work experience in position(s) allowed the candidate to gain and use the minimum qualifications above.

Environmental/Physical/Special

While this role can largely be accomplished within normal campus operating hours, some duties will require early morning, evening, or weekend hours. This position requires frequent travel to off-site locations, both local to the Bay Area, and state-wide.
