JOB SUMMARY

The Department of Biology at California State University, San Bernardino is seeking part-time graduate student teaching assistant applications from qualified individuals for our San Bernardino Campus (SBC) and/or our Palm Desert Campus (PDC). Candidates for this position should be graduate students in the MS Biology program and should possess good organizational and communication skills with a drive to enhance student success. Prior teaching experience is recommended but not required. This position will involve teaching laboratory or discussion sections, mainly in our foundational level courses including Introduction to Biology Lab, Principles of Biology I and II, Microbiology for Allied Health Majors, and Human Anatomy and Physiology for Allied Health Majors I and II. Candidates should demonstrate their ability to interact and work effectively with a wide and culturally diverse range of students, including first-generation college students. Candidates must also have a commitment to teamwork and work with the course coordinator and other instructors where appropriate to allow for effective and equitable instruction across different course sections.

This is a pool of graduate students for the department to consider for teaching assistantships, and all appointments are temporary. Decisions on teaching assistantships are made on a rolling basis, normally between several months before and up to the beginning of the academic term. It is recommended that candidates submit their applications at least four (4) months before the beginning of an academic term to receive full consideration for available positions.

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate laboratory or discussion courses in Biology, Microbiology, and Anatomy and Physiology, and have a command of the subject matter for the course(s) that they will be teaching. Typical activities include weekly instruction and supervision of the section(s)/course(s) to which they are assigned, attending course team meetings, reading and evaluating student papers and other assignments, proctor examinations, maintain/submit student records, and performing other tasks as assigned. Teaching assistants should maintain regular communication with course coordinators, return graded work promptly, record grades regularly as appropriate for the course (e.g. in Canvas), and return final section grades by the last day of final exams. Candidates should respond to course or departmental-related emails within 48 hours.

Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population and to working effectively with faculty, staff and students across a wide range of disciplines.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must be “classified” students in the CSUSB Master’s Program in Biology. Students may not be considered if they are in probationary status or have any outstanding incomplete grades.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Candidates must be “classified” students in the CSUSB Master’s Program in Biology and have a command of the subject matter for the course(s) that they will be teaching. Candidates should have a letter of recommendation from their MS thesis advisor.

    Evidence of scholarly activity, publication, and innovation is valued. Evidence of exemplary graduate-level teaching and leadership experience at program level is preferred and should be noted in application.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Biology has 14 tenure-track/tenured faculty with a variety of research interests, as well as lecturers and technicians who provide pivotal support. The department offers undergraduate and graduate programs. The department has facilities for microscopy, 3D printing, cell culture and stem cell research, animal care, and plant growth.
