Job Summary:  

Under the direction of The Captain and Cadet Leadership & Development, this position is assigned to manage the Pirate’s Cove during the annual Summer Sea Term. Greets and assists customers with store inquiries, answers the phone and tabulates purchases using the register for transactions. Use safe money-handling procedures and secure transaction practices. Take inventory, stock shelves, and organize the store.

About the California State University Maritime Academy:

Established in 1929, California State University Maritime Academy, a campus of the California State University, is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. Located on the scenic Vallejo waterfront, the campus serves a student population of approximately 1000 undergraduates and 50 graduate students.

Cal Maritime offers seven baccalaureate degrees in Business Administration, International Strategy and Security, Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering,  Marine Transportation, and Oceanography. The undergraduate curriculum includes licensing programs for future merchant marine, Coast Guard, and Naval reserve officers. Cal Maritime also offers a Master of Science in Transportation and Engineering Management degree, as well as a number of extended learning programs and courses.

Job Duties:

  • Greet customers and render assistance as necessary responding to inquiries of products and merchandise.
  • Answers phone and responds to inquiries or direct calls for appropriate resolution.
  • Operates cash register tabulating transactions, accepting payments, giving change, bagging purchases, and processing returns.
    • Starts up and shuts down register, troubleshoots, counts down register, performs cashier audits, etc.
    • Process daily cash, and credit/debit card transactions,
    • Process receipts for all transactions
    • Balance the cash drawer including checks and credit card receipts.
    • Observe safe money-handling procedures and secure transaction practices when accepting cash payments, making changes, accepting checks and credit card payments, and processing refunds.
    • Use cashier integrity to safeguard register and drawer deposits.
  • Organize & straighten merchandise, stock shelves, and price merchandise
  • May assist in setting up displays and signs.
  • Organize, maintain, and clean store and equipment.
  • Ensure all equipment is in working condition and report any malfunctioning equipment to Cadet Leadership & Development.
  • Take inventory including before the start of the Summer Sea Term, during, and at the end of the Summer Sea Term.
  • Receive and check products.
  • Complete and update the inventory template.
  • Run events onboard in the evenings such as movie nights on the Helo deck, karaoke, game and paint nights. Schedule will vary based on the availability of the employees/management.
  • Other duties assigned by The Captain or Cadet Leadership & Development.

Hours may vary, typically 6-7 days- 20 HRS/Week. While at sea, the Pirate's Cove is open 7 days a week, in port Pirate's Cove is closed.

Must attend all mandatory Summer Sea Term meetings including meetings occurring before the start of Summer Sea Term and all trainings along with IT and accounting Dept.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Must possess a valid U.S. Passport and a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • Must be registered and attending 2025 Summer Sea Term as a student.
  • Strong customer service skills including effective communication.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize workload.
  • Nights and weekends are required.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • 0 - 12 months of previous retail or clerical experience preferred.

Supplemental Information

Background Check: Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Eligibility to Work:  Applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship or authorization to work in the United States within three days of the date of hire.

Integration: The California State University Board of Trustees has approved the integration of the California State University Maritime Academy with California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, effective July 1, 2025. The two campuses will form one academic institution operated as California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and all employment positions with California State University Maritime Academy are subject to this transition. Employees hired in the period after the Trustees’ approval on November 21, 2024 and prior to the integration date on July 1, 2025 will have their employment transitioned to California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.  Employment shall continue to be subject to California State University policies and applicable collective bargaining agreements. Any changes in organizational structure, reporting relationships, or employment conditions will be communicated as details are finalized.
