Job Summary

The temporary Academic Advisor (Student Services Professional IB level) will assist with providing academic advising to students in the transition from the quarter system to the semester system. The advisors play a crucial role in ensuring a smooth transition for students by providing comprehensive advising services and support tailored to the new semester-based academic calendar. The advisors may be assigned to work in one of the six academic colleges or the first year advising center.

Under general supervision the Academic Advisor provides academic advising to students from the assigned advising center. The incumbent provides advisement to individuals and groups of new and continuing students. The incumbent must maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of students, faculty, staff, and supporters by employing various interviewing and counseling techniques.

Department Summary

The Mustang Success Center provides an inclusive environment that supports undergraduate students with their successful transition and integration into Cal Poly. The center’s staff provides accessible academic advising that guides students to clear pathways of success and timely graduation. Working collaboratively with the Director for the MSC as well as the college advising staff, develops and implements programs to support the academic success of our students regardless of college/department affiliation.

Key Qualifications

  • Provide comprehensive academic advising and support services to all students seeking services from the Mustang Success Center.  Services include such activities as one-on-one academic advising, mentoring, career planning and personal support and group sessions, program development and assessment.
  • Coordinate and lead the student assistant program for the Mustang Success Center.
  • Coordinate and lead the recruitment, hiring, scheduling, training, and ongoing professional development for student assistants.
  • Recognize specific program needs and develop approaches for implementation that meet these needs.
  • Develop program objectives, as well as student learning outcomes; assess these objectives and outcomes by collecting and analyzing data, both short- and long-term.

Education and Experience

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution. Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience.
  • A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.
