THE DEPARTMENT:
The University Police Department (UPD) is responsible for law enforcement, physical security, and emergency response at Cal Poly Pomona. The department is staffed by trained police officers, professional civilian staff and auxiliary personnel and is operational 24 hours-a-day, year-round. The peace officers of this department have statewide police authority, and are vested with the same law enforcement powers and responsibilities as the municipal police or sheriff's departments in any California community. The department serves as "first responder" for a broad range of crisis issues on the campus including medical aid calls, injuries and environmental emergencies. The department is responsible for response to all emergencies, crime reports and investigations on campus (except homicides and missing persons per the Kristin Smart Act). In addition, the department offers a wide range of programs and services designed to enhance the safety and security of the community and support the mission of the university. These responsibilities are carried out through a set of core values that reflect commitment to the highest standards of excellence and incorporate the community-oriented policing philosophy. The University Police Department is part of the Administrative Affairs Division whose mission is to provide quality fiscal, human and facility services in support of the university community through partnerships and innovative solutions.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership:
- Function as Watch commander in the absence of a Watch Commander for a shift of officers or assistant Watch Commander
- Responsible for leading a shift and providing training and/or direction to officers in the field.
- Provide leadership to assigned sworn and non-sworn personnel, through on scene presence, review and approval of written reports and documents.
General Law Enforcement:
- Enforce local, county, and state laws.
- Employee investigates criminal and non-criminal occurrences, makes arrest, interviews witnesses, transports prisoners, and testifies in court proceedings as required.
- Patrols the campus and other property owned or operated by the University using various vehicular, foot, and stationary assignments.
- Investigates traffic collisions, enforces traffic laws, provides safety escorts, responds to radio calls accordingly, responds to emergencies as needed and performs other duties as assigned.
Training:
- Conducts and/or participates in training which includes classroom instruction and on-the-job training.
- Employee must meet all training requirements established by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training and Department policy.
- Employee will assist the department with hands on field training of officers.
- Conduct roll call training at beginning of each shift.
- Conduct safety training and monitor workplace conditions for safety hazards. Serves as the Field Training Officer for new recruits, Student Assistants and Parking staff.
Report Writing:
- Writes reports to accurately describe events as a they occur or as they are described to the employee.
- Includes drafting traffic collision sketches and crime scene diagrams as needed. May be required to generate reports on a computer.
Communications/Community Interaction:
- Participation in public speaking as requested by superior officer e.g. address housing residents, conduct public tours, safety talks.
- Communicate with a multi-ethnic and diverse community.
- Builds rapport between professional/civilian employees, students, volunteers, staff, faculty, and visitors by promoting public trust through ethical behavior and adherence to a set of core values as set forth by the Division of Administrative Affairs.
- Seeks opportunities to foster partnerships and build diverse teams within the university community.
- Supports the principles of community-oriented policing.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Combination - High school diploma or equivalent and graduation from a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) academy.
- Eligible to be a peace officer in the State of California.
- Possess a valid P.O.S.T. Certificate of Eligibility or a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate in good standing.
- Driver License, Valid and in State with insurance.
- Two or more years active law enforcement experience.
- Thorough knowledge of current law enforcement methods and procedures.
- Thorough knowledge of current criminal codes and laws.
- Thorough knowledge of effective investigative techniques and procedures.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, including writing clear and comprehensive reports.
- Ability to work independently and make sound judgments.
- Ability to provide effective leadership and direction to field personnel during assigned shift.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Employees must meet standards of physical stature, endurance, and agility established by the University Police Department.
- Tasks involve frequent driving, walking and standing, and occasional running; frequent light lifting and occasional lifting of heavy objects and/or persons; employee must have the physical ability to apprehend and restrain subjects and to defend oneself from attack.
- Tasks involve the operation of vehicles, firearms, and other equipment in which manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination are important ingredients of safe and productive operations.
- Tasks may require exposure to extreme heat or cold, extreme weather conditions, strong odors and/or smoke, dust, or pollen.
- Tasks require visual, color, depth, and sound perception and discrimination as well as oral and written communications ability.
- Employee must have the ability to regularly observe actions, situation, react appropriately.
- Operate motor vehicles, walk medium to long distances in a variety of weather conditions, lift objects, periodically engage in physical confrontations.
- Have ability to observe actions and situations and react appropriately. Communicate clearly -- verbally and in writing.
- Ability to manage confidential documentation, personnel and payroll items, and sensitive/confidential materials in a professional and discreet manner.
- Employee must successfully complete an FTO course and all associated requirements before the end of their probationary period and successfully complete recertification every three years

CSU Classification Salary Range
This position is part of the Statewide University Police Association (SUPA) - Unit 8. The CSU Classification Standards for this position are located on the CSU Classification Standards website. The CSU Salary Schedule is located on the CSU Salary Schedule website. The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum $7,056 and maximum $10,404 per month. University Driving Requirements
Positions that require driving for university business by using a personal or state vehicle must comply with the Authorized University Driver Policy. Driving records are monitored and evaluated by the Risk Management Department. The Risk Management Department evaluates a good driving report based on the following criteria. The driver must: 1. Have a valid California or other State Driver’s license. 2. Have no more than 3 motor vehicle violations or been the cause of 3 accidents in a 12-month period (or any combination of 3 thereof) 3. Not have more than 3 DMV Points, if their license is Class C or, 4. Not have more than 5 DMV Points, if their license is Class A, B, or C with endorsements.
