Position Description

San Francisco State University, Department of Social Work offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning August 2026. We seek a colleague whose teaching and research interests include Behavioral Health and/or Integrated Behavioral Health. We seek a colleague whose teaching, community practice experience, and research interests include the full range of behavioral health services to children, youth, and adults. We are especially interested in qualified candidates with a demonstrated commitment in social work vision and practice that centers social and racial justice and advances the diversity and excellence of the School of Social Work's heritage of social action and scholarship. We are seeking qualified candidates with a demonstrated commitment -- through their research, teaching, and service -- to the diversity and excellence of our academic BASW and MSW programs.

Required qualifications

  • Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate degrees in Social Welfare or a relevant field of study. An MSW degree is also required from a CSWE accredited program.  Terminal degree must be completed by the first day of employment (can be ABD when applying).
  • Two years of post-MSW professional practice.
  • Record of working and communicating effectively with colleagues and students.

About the Department

The San Francisco State University School of Social Work currently educates over 260 BASW and MSW students in our accredited program and employs over 25 lecturers and 10 staff. The mission of the San Francisco State University School of Social Work is to educate diverse learners to achieve progressive development and promote social change throughout the Bay Area and beyond. The School of Social Work cultivates ethical leadership for social justice and promotes professional advocacy, versatility, activism, and cultural humility.

Responsibilities

The position requires BASW and/or MSW teaching experience, mentoring and advising BASW and/or MSW students, developing an active ongoing scholarship agenda in one’s area of specialty, and ongoing committee and service assignments.

Compensation                                                                                            

The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) salary range is

$102,000 to $104,000 annually (12 monthly payments per academic year).

Salary offered is commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition, the California Equal Pay Act prohibits employers from paying its employees less than those of the opposite sex and/or another race or ethnicity for substantially similar work (https://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/california_equal_pay_act.htm).

Professional development funds, moving expenses, start‐up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available.
