
Job Summary
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library is a unique partnership between San José State University (SJSU) and the City of San José, which opened in August 2003. It is the first library in the United States to integrate the services and collections of a major university and public library system. Located in downtown San José, the King Library is an impressive 475,000 square feet with nine floors of collections, collaborative work spaces, meeting rooms, exhibit areas, and unique resources dedicated to lifelong learning for all to enjoy - for free. The building serves as the SJSU library, the main library for the San José Public Library system, and as a cornerstone for the entire community.

The SJSU King Library Director of Access Services provides leadership, planning, and supervision for the Access Services Unit, including Stack Maintenance, Circulation Systems and Services, Course Reserves, and Student Computing Services. The Director oversees budgeting, resource allocation, operations, assessment, and reporting for all University Access Services functions and serves as the library’s expert on circulation and public services.
Working collaboratively with library and campus partners, including San José Public Library administrators, the Director ensures uninterrupted access to collections, comprehensive customer service, and effective promotion of library resources through outreach and communication. The position supervises five staff members, manages key systems and technologies (including the online circulation system, LMS-integrated course reserves, and self-service equipment), and leads projects that support library operations.
The Director collaborates with library leadership, campus stakeholders, and CSU systemwide colleagues to align Access Services programs with library, campus, and CSU goals, keeping the Associate Dean for Innovation and Resource Management informed of significant developments and serving on relevant management and leadership groups.
Key Responsibilities
Library Access Services Operations
- Provides leadership and strategic direction for Access Services (Circulation, Course Reserves, Student Computing Services, Stack Maintenance), aligning operations with library, campus, and CSU priorities.
- Develops, implements, and interprets circulation policies and best practices; collaborates with campus partners, San José Public Library, and CSU colleagues to ensure a consistent, high-quality user experience.
- Manages departmental budgets, resources, data collection, and assessment activities to support operational improvements and strategic decision-making.
- Supervises staff and student employees, including hiring, training, scheduling, work direction, performance input, and independent judgment in setting priorities and resolving issues.
Student Computing Services (SCS) Management
- Oversees operations of the Student Computing Service Center, including supervision, hiring, training, and scheduling of staff and student assistants.
- Develops and manages the circulating technology collection, ensuring accurate system records and comprehensive equipment inventory.
- Collaborates with Library IT and campus IT on hardware/software upgrades, inventory control, and technology loan strategies.
- Develops and monitors SCS budget allocations and leads outreach efforts to promote services and resources.
Online Circulation System
- Provides technical oversight for online circulation system configurations, structures, and related technologies.
- Leads implementation of new system features, third-party integrations, and RFID-related projects in coordination with the ILS System Administrator and Library IT.
- Serves on the Library Integrated Systems Team and in a leadership capacity within the CSU Unified Library Management System.
- Develops and delivers library-wide training related to circulation systems and associated technologies.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of library circulation systems and practices, including policies, procedures, and technologies for collection access and user services.
- Comprehensive understanding of project and program management, including strategic planning, evaluation, and implementation of library-wide initiatives.
- Expertise in budgeting and resource management, with the ability to plan, forecast, and manage multiple departmental budgets.
- Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to supervise, train, and develop staff and student employees in a complex, collaborative environment.
- Comprehensive knowledge of user experience (UX) assessment methodologies and their application to library service design and improvement.
- Comprehensive knowledge of technology planning and inventory control, including management of library equipment, systems, and RFID-related projects.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders and influence decision-making.
- Ability to analyze and interpret complex data, apply findings to operations, and present results clearly to inform planning and policy decisions.
Required Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree and/or equivalent training.
- Six years of administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Five (5) or more years of progressively responsible experience in academic or large public library access services, circulation services, user services or related operations.
- Demonstrated experience supervising full-time staff and student employees in a complex, service-oriented environment.
- Demonstrated experience working with an Integrated Library System (ILS), particularly circulation configurations and workflows, and developing and delivering training on ILS circulation functions and related technologies.
- Experience developing and assessing user experience (UX) initiatives using qualitative and quantitative methods.
Compensation
Classification: Administrative Analyst/Specialist – Exempt III
Anticipated Hiring Range: $8,761/month - $9,115/month (Step 17 – Step 19)
CSU Salary Range: $6,382/month - $9,297/month (Step 1 – Step 20)
