Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Associate Director for Residential Education, the Area Coordinator will monitor a designated residential community and provide lead work direction to 12-15 Resident Assistants and other DHRE student leaders. The position is a full-time, live-on, professional who will live in a campus apartment and serve as part of the Residential Education team. The position will involve assisting with the educational development of 400-600 campus students, recommending solutions for student development and community initiatives, crisis management; student leadership, academic success; and student mentorship.

Responsibilities: 

Advising and Student Success:

- Serve as primary advisor to Village Council.
- Create and promote an environment that enhances a sense of belonging and commitment to the overall campus community.
- Work with students to successfully live with roommates within a residence hall or apartment community.
- Provide information to help students access the necessary resources on and off campus.
- Attend general assembly and executive board meetings.
- Meet regularly with Village Council executive board members.
- Demonstrate support for the RHA and Village Council as a group by supporting and/or attending programs and events.

Student Conduct and Crisis Management:
- Provide first line of professional assistance in meeting with residents regarding roommate(s), behavior, academics, and other concerns.
- Address community related issues (roommate conflict, community respect, etc.) utilizing interpersonal, fact gathering information to determine the severity of the situation and provide necessary steps and resources available to resolve the situation.
- Adjudicate conduct violations within designated area and timeframe; implement and follow-through on disciplinary sanctions through an educational-based conduct process.
- Counsel students, staff, and/or parents in crisis situations, psychological emergencies, and/or medical emergencies; while working appropriately with CAPS, Student Health Center, University Police, and other offices as necessary.
- Communicate guidelines of conduct that protect the individual student's rights and define student responsibilities.
- Advise and support Resident Advisors in matters of conduct.
- Track incident reports and sanctions in a judicial database.
- Enforce and apply University and DHRE policies.

Programming and Community Development:
- Create, promote, and coordinate academic, educational, cultural, recreational, service, and other programs that meet the needs of the diverse population.
- Conduct periodic review of programs to ensure high quality and adherence to the Housing and Residential Education mission, vision, and learning outcomes.
- Assist in the development and recruitment of designated Living Learning Communities.
- Continuously assess residence hall student needs for additional programs and services.
- Establish and maintain working relations and rapport with residents, faculty, and other campus partners.
- Work on creating community initiatives that serve the individual halls and the community.
- Maintain visibility in the residence halls by attending evening programs, walk-throughs and regular contact with students and staff.
- Orient students to the ideals of community living, the CSUSB campus, and the neighboring community through active and passive programming.
- Work closely with other Student Affairs departments and Academic Affairs.
- Support and attend University events and programs.
- Track hall programming efforts in programming database and master calendar.

Lead Work Direction:
- Provide lead work direction, guide, and monitor a community staff of Resident Assistants, Academic Mentors, and Front Desk Assistants.
- Participate in Student Leader recruitment and selection process.
- Facilitate and participate in the Student Leader training program, as well as on-going developmental training sessions.
- Assist the Associate Director to instruct six-week leadership-based Resident Assistant course.
- Provide input to student staff evaluations on a semester basis.
- Assume responsibility for summer employee residence hall and/or summer camps and conferences, and a variety of other Residential Education summer projects.
- Maintain close contact with building desk attendants and maintenance staff and have knowledge of desk procedures.

Administration:
- Provide lead work direction to staff in regard to daily operations, training, programming, academic success, and community development.
- Provide lead work direction on various administrative processes, such as, student conduct, room changes, check-in/check-out processes, programming, etc.
- Assist with regular review and revision of Residential Education initiatives.
- Conduct weekly staff meetings and bi-weekly meetings with resident assistants.
- Establish office hours for availability to residents and staff.
- Attend monthly departmental staff meetings.
- Submit administrative reports and forms (i.e., room condition reports, end of the year reports, health and safety forms, etc.).
- Support and monitor hall opening and closing procedures at the beginning and end of each semester, as well as during vacation periods and breaks.
- Assist with room selection for new and returning students.
- Maintain inventories of all residence hall equipment and furnishings.
- Conduct weekly building walk-throughs.
- Attend weekly one-on-one meeting with Associate Director of Residential Education
- Participate in professional staff selection process.
- Collaborate with maintenance and custodial staffs to respond to maintenance concerns and facilities emergencies.
- Perform other classification related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.

Required Qualifications:

Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.

Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multisexed and multi‑aged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working for a housing/residence life department preferred.

Special Conditions: 

The position is a full-time, live-on, professional who will live in a campus apartment and serve as part of the Residential Education team.

Serve in professional on-call rotation. This position requires working variable hours, including late night and early morning hours as situations dictate, as well as when needed in an emergency response capacity. The Area Coordinators, in conjunction with other professional Residential Education staff members, alternate responsibility for on-call coverage.

Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm with late night evening meeting and events.

License / Certification: 

Valid CA Driver's License and insurance

Compensation and Benefits:

The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

The anticipated hiring range is set up to $5,083 per month for qualified candidates.

CSU Classification Range: minimum $5,083 - maximum $7,228 monthly.

Position Information:

Work status: Full-time/Exempt/Probationary

Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am – 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.

Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.

Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.  CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Drivers License Check

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required.  Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Mandated Reporter

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Campus Security Authority

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) position under the federal Jeanne Cleary Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. CSAs are responsible for reporting allegations of Clery Act Crimes reported to them or that they witness. CSA training is required.
