Position Summary:
Under the general direction of the Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics the Sports Information Director serves as the primary media and communications liaison for the intercollegiate athletic program. This role is responsible for developing strategic communications promoting the achievements of student athletes and athletic teams across all media platforms (websites, social media etc.), maintaining statical records and managing game-day medial operations. Specific areas of responsibilities will include writing, editing, and proofreading copy to produce standard print or electronically based communications for targeted internal and external audiences as it relates to Collegiate Athletics, collaborating with designers, photographers, coaches, student-athletes and others on the theme, designing and content of print, electronic and web-based publications to maximize impact. Leads all game day sports information operations, including statistics, live streaming, public address, and press box management. This role serves as an Athletic department’s representative and/or spokesperson for media contacts; cultivating media relationships; advising Athletics' staff, intercollegiate coaches and student-athletes on media interviews; and setting up speakers. The incumbent will also oversee and mentor student assistants, interns, and/or graduate assistants in athletics communications roles.
CA Drive License required -will be utilizing campus cart and occasionally personal vehicle.
Must work evenings and weekends as well as some off campus venues. Will require some traveling with teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Responsible for writing/editing, and facilitating the inclusion of feature articles in local, regional and national newspapers and specialized publications.
- Maintains strategic relationships with newspaper and other media personnel for the purpose of garnering quality exposure, relaying game information and increasing the visibility of the Athletic Department.
- Serve as a liaison to the student newspaper for athletics inclusion and feature stories.
- Responsible for the production, design and printing of all schedules, posters and calendars for CSUDH athletic events and disseminating to campus departments, local businesses, schools and community groups.
- Lead all game day sports information operations, including statistics, live streaming, public address, and press box management.
- Responsible for execution and oversite of online streaming for all home athletic games.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, sports management, public relations, or a related field.
- Experience: At least 2 years of experience in collegiate athletics communications, media relations, or equivalent.
- CA Driver License
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of sports rules and terminology, especially NCAA level sports
- Knowledge of game statistics and ability to accurately track and report game statistics.
- Knowledge of CCAA and NCAA Division II rules and procedures.
- Knowledge and Expertise in social media management: Creating engaging content across platforms (Twitter/X, Instagram, Facebook, etc.).
- Knowledge in Statistical software proficiency: Experience with NCAA Live Stats, StatCrew, PrestoStats, or DakStats.
- Thorough knowledge of applicable copyright and other laws pertaining to publications and news media; local cable and print/online media market; play-by play and color commenting; facility requirements to accommodate radio and television; responsibilities of home event staff; social media.
- Accurately compile, compute and report game statistics for press releases and record books, operate various software and technology used for gathering of statistics.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in the California State University system.
- Experience working closely with coaches, athletic trainers, student athletes and administrative staff.
- Experience writing and editing
- Experience working independently and collaboratively in a diverse and inclusive environment.
- Experience overseeing professional and student staff.
