Housing and Residential Engagement at Cal State Fullerton provides a safe, inclusive living environment for students that supports learning, personal growth, and community, empowering Titans to succeed both inside and outside the classroom. Cal State Fullerton currently provides residence hall and apartment style living for approximately 2,000 students that is safe, clean, and very convenient. We seek an exceptional individual to join our Housing-Administration team as the Building Service Engineer. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to inclusivity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Duties and Responsibilities
|
Under the supervision of the Supervising Building Service Engineer or designee, the Building Service Engineer operates, maintains, services, troubleshoots, repairs, and inspects mechanical equipment and building systems for Housing facilities including central plant chillers, building automation systems (BAS/BMS), and dining equipment. Independently performs journey-level work on HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, electrical, pneumatic, mechanical, and related building systems, and components. Responsibilities include preventive maintenance, diagnostics, system calibration, repair, installation, and inspection of equipment throughout Housing facilities.
The position also performs water treatment testing, pool and fountain system maintenance, lock and access control work, and general building repairs. This role supports the University mission by ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient facility operations for student housing environments. The Building Service Engineer functions effectively in a team environment, demonstrates initiative, maintains strong customer service standards, and contributes to maintaining a safe, comfortable residential learning environment. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications
|
Two years of journey-level experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of boiler, heating, ventilating, refrigeration, and air conditioning equipment and systems or the equivalent combination of formal course work in mechanical technology and hands-on experience. Thorough knowledge of high- and low-pressure boilers, as well as heating, pneumatic, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and other mechanical equipment. Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools, and materials used in the operation, maintenance, and repair of such equipment. General knowledge of ventilation principles, thermal dynamics, and closed water systems. Working knowledge of energy management systems including the ability to understand and use system features. Ability to install, operate, and repair HVAC equipment and systems. Demonstrated high degree of mechanical skill equivalent to journey-level in one or more related trades such as plumbing, pipe fitting, electrical or air conditioning. Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications. Ability to make rough sketches and estimate costs, time, and materials required for mechanical work. Ability ty to maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems. Ability to prepare standard reports, provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants, and analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations. Ability ty to read and write at a level appropriate to the position and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to complete the background check satisfactorily may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Preferred Qualifications
|
Experience with EMS/BMS platforms. Experience repairing plumbing fixtures and clearing drain stoppages. Experience with access control locksets and locks. Experience with absorption (CPFM) and centrifugal mechanical refrigerant chillers (Housing). Knowledge of large facility mechanical systems. Experience with generators, boilers, condensers, cooling towers, and heat exchangers.

A valid California driver’s license.
