Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Director, SHS Operations, led by the Senior Lead Nurse, and according to established protocol or direction of a physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner, the Medical Assistant (MA) performs a variety of skilled Medical Assistant duties and gives direct nursing care to students in the Student Health Center.

Furthermore, the incumbent provides services that are equitable, inclusive, and culturally sensitive to enhance the quality of campus life.  This position uses a student-centered and equity-minded approach in all communication and service efforts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Medical assistant duties: Responsible for administering medications/immunizations and performing routine care and/or medical assistant duties which require training and skill; Assist practitioners in the delivery of health care services such as examinations, clinical procedures, and medical treatments. Ensure health care patient care areas are fully stocked, organized and clean.
  • Administer medications by mouth, intradermal injection, intramuscular injection, subcutaneous injection, including immunizations and tuberculosis testing.
  • Take temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration readings, height and weight and other vital signs.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

 Ability to work as part of a team through close collaboration with colleagues and coordinate with others. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and maintain a positive and respectful attitude. Ability to consistently report to work on time prepared to perform the duties of the position. Attention to detail to maintain accurate medical records   Ability to multitask, prioritize, follow through, and meet deadlines. Comply with regulatory agencies, SHS policies, procedures and guidelines. Knowledge and compliance of HIPAA Health Care Privacy and Security Law. Practice within Medical Assistant scope of practice as guided by Medical Board of California.

 Ability to quickly learn related clinic procedures and to handle equipment required for patient care in a Student Health Center. Establish cooperative relationships with students, clinicians, and co-workers; and observe and record observations. Computer skills strongly preferred for health information technology. Ability to use sound judgment and make informed decisions and consult with appropriate clinician as needed. Ability to work on campus daily to perform job duties.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.  Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.  Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

  • Equivalent to a high school diploma required.
  • One year of experience performing the duties of a medical assistant in an outpatient clinic preferred.
  • Position requires for duties to be performed on campus.

Physical Summary

  • Heavy work - Job involves lifting more than 40 pounds. Approximately half of the incumbent's time will be spent walking, standing, squatting, kneeling, or climbing

Licenses / Certificates

  • Certificate of completion from an accredited and approved medical assistant training program required.
  • Possess and maintain valid CPR/AED certification required.

Compensation

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

Hiring Range: The hiring range for this position is $3,680 - $4,797 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $3,680 - $5,916 per month.

Time Base

1.0  time-base, 40 hours per week.

Duration of Appointment
