Job Summary

Under direct supervision of the Supervisor, Payroll Services, this position independently performs, for significant portion of time, the payroll/personnel processing transactions in the State Controller's Office database in a timely manner so that accurate paychecks for employees will generate in time to meet designated pay dates.

Key Responsibilities

  • Personnel/Payroll Information Management System (PIMS) Payroll Processing for Salaried and Hourly Employees:  Under direct supervision of the Payroll Supervisor, the Payroll Tech II will process payroll and related personnel documents using the State Controller's Office PIMS/PIP payroll system - Independently initiates PPT's to appoint, separate or change the pay status for several categories of employees.  Process overtime, shift differential, special consultants, merit awards, retirement adjustments, and all other items pertaining to ensuring employees are paid promptly and timely with minimal direction from the Payroll Supervisor.
  • Customer Service to assist employees and departments - Tactfully and clearly explain a wide variety of complex procedures and policies to individuals and departments who have minimal knowledge of payroll and personnel related processes and procedures.
  • Payroll accounts receivables (AR) - Post employee information maintenance - Researches, notifies, tracks and collects outstanding payroll and benefits accounts receivable and salary advance balances.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Relevant and transferable experience in HR, payroll, finance, and administrative functions, with a strong ability to learn and apply complex policies and procedures independently. Detail-oriented, capable of accurate data entry with zero errors, and proficient in reviewing numerical records to identify and resolve discrepancies. Ability to learn systems such as PIMS and PeopleSoft HR and thrive in fast-paced environments with frequent interruptions. Strong arithmetic, communication, and writing skills, along with a solid understanding of general office practices. Dependable team player and self-starter who consistently meets deadlines and handles pressure effectively.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.  Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.  Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

Equivalent to two years of experience in preparing and processing payroll/personnel documents required.

Physical Summary

  • Sedentary work - Involves mainly sitting. Walking and standing are minimal. Lifting is limited to lightweight objects. (10 pounds or less).

Compensation

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

Hiring Range: The hiring range for this position is $5,000 - $5,333 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $3,864 - $6,620 per month.

Time Base

1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.

Duration of Appointment

This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
