Job Summary

The Director of Application Development and Operations (DevOps) provides leadership and operational oversight for DevOps practices supporting enterprise-wide software and application development. This role is responsible for advancing automation and Continuous Improvement/Continuous Development (CI/CD) pipelines to streamline development workflows. The position also plays a key role in aligning DevOps initiatives with Divisional and institutional goals, fostering a culture of innovation, and driving continuous improvement across development and operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership & Planning – Define and drive the DevOps vision, aligning with divisional and institutional IT goals and software development strategies.
  • CI/CD & Automation Oversight – Lead the design, implementation, and optimization of continuous integration and delivery pipelines and automation frameworks.
  • Team Leadership & Talent Development – Manage and mentor DevOps engineers, foster a culture of innovation, and support professional growth.
  • Governance, Compliance & Documentation – Ensure DevOps practices meet institutional standards for security, web accessibility, compliance, and documentation.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively, with technical and non-technical individuals within a culturally diverse campus environment. Maintain a professional demeanor. Maintain IT professional standards of anonymity for data that resides on campus servers and computer systems. Maintain confidentiality of all information. Attend and participate in departmental and team meetings. Perform other duties as assigned to meet the needs and objectives of the department and/or division.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

The role requires maintaining strict IT professional standards, including ensuring the anonymity of data stored on campus servers and computer systems, while upholding the confidentiality of all information. The individual must demonstrate the ability to lead and supervise the DevOps Team effectively, actively participate in DoIT team meetings and other relevant campus gatherings, and perform additional duties as assigned to support the university’s goals and operational needs.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.  Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.  Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field and a minimum of five years of related experience required. 

• Master’s preferred.

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate with developers, infrastructure teams, and executive leadership.

• Familiarity with various programming languages including PHP, C#, and Visual Basic.

• Experience with various programming frameworks and Integrated Development Environments (IDE).

• Familiarity with IT governance frameworks and regulatory compliance standards (e.g., NIST, HIPAA, FERPA).

• 5+ years in DevOps or related engineering roles with increasing responsibility.

Physical Summary

  • Sedentary work - Involves mainly sitting. Walking and standing are minimal. Lifting is limited to lightweight objects. (10 pounds or less).

Compensation

CSU MPP Compensation Summary Range:  The MPP Comp Summary Range for this position is $11,064 - $16,596 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
