Job Summary:  

The Student Assistant will work approximately 20 hours per week. Students will be required to work during Campus Pantry operating hours, including donation and food sorting shifts and food distributions. Interns will also participate in educational seminars featuring community speakers who work on food insecurity and various health issues and provide one educational program/speaker to bring to the campus.

About the California State University Maritime Academy:

Established in 1929, California State University Maritime Academy, a campus of the California State University, is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. Located on the scenic Vallejo waterfront, the campus serves a student population of approximately 1000 undergraduates and 50 graduate students.

Cal Maritime offers seven baccalaureate degrees in Business Administration, International Strategy and Security, Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering,  Marine Transportation, and Oceanography. The undergraduate curriculum includes licensing programs for future merchant marine, coast guard, and naval reserve officers. Cal Maritime also offers a Master of Science in Transportation and Engineering Management degree, as well as a number of extended learning programs and courses.

Job Duties:

Cal Maritime’s Campus Pantry Interns will assist with the following projects and assignments:

  • Distribute food to Pantry clients.
  • Interact with and assist Pantry clients.
  • Set-up & manage Pop-up Thursdays from 5pm – 7pm: Fresh Fruits & Veggies
  • Receive food donations and inventory Pantry supplies and food.
  • Prepare and distribute additional resources to Pantry clients.
  • Prepare weekly summaries of Pantry activities and semester reports of Pantry attendance.
  • Support creation of marketing materials such as flyers, newsletter updates, and social media.
  • Collaborate with on- and off-campus organizations to support the Pantry.
  • Implement projects for the continued evolution and improvement of the Pantry.
  • Work directly with students to guide them through the application process for CalFresh benefits program.
  • Plan and execute at least one program a month that provide either community service and outreach, and/or learning opportunity for all students at Cal Maritime.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications: 

  • Typing and keyboard skills and the ability to use standard office equipment
  • Ability to create artistic flyers for events with the use of Canva, Photoshop, etc.
  • Ability to use word processing, excel, and other Office products
  • Ability to respond to phone and in-person inquiries or route calls as appropriate
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation

Background Background Check: Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check, and DMV records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.
