PURPOSE:

Under the general direction of the Interim Director, Marketing and Communications, and the day-to-day guidance of the Multimedia Strategy Lead, the Jr. Multimedia Specialist contributes to the planning, production, editing, organization, and distribution of multimedia content supporting California State University, Monterey Bay's marketing, communications, advancement, recruitment, and institutional storytelling initiatives.

The incumbent serves as a multimedia content creator with a primary emphasis on professional video production while also capturing professional photography supporting university marketing and communications. Working within established brand standards, production workflows, and communication strategies, the Jr. Multimedia Specialist creates compelling visual content for university websites, social media, digital marketing campaigns, publications, executive communications, campus events, and institutional storytelling initiatives.

The incumbent demonstrates knowledge of and works within the university's Brand Promise, Brand Pillars, Brand Personality, and Brand Photo Styles, ensuring all multimedia content consistently reflects the university's visual identity, strategic messaging, and institutional priorities. The incumbent contributes to the long-term organization, management, and preservation of the university's multimedia assets while supporting University Communications' mission to strengthen the university's reputation through engaging visual storytelling.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:   

Multimedia Editing, Post-Production & Digital Asset Management

  • Performs professional editing of photography and video content produced by University Communications staff, freelancers, contractors, student employees, and campus partners.
  • Edits interviews, documentaries, promotional videos, executive communications, recruitment campaigns, event recaps, social media content, and other institutional multimedia projects.
  • Performs color correction, color grading, audio cleanup, sound mixing, captioning, graphics integration, formatting, rendering, exporting, encoding, and final delivery of multimedia assets.
  • Reviews multimedia assets for technical quality, accessibility compliance, brand consistency, metadata accuracy, and production standards prior to publication.
  • Organizes, archives, keywords, captions, and maintains university photography and video assets utilizing PhotoShelter and other digital asset management systems.
  • Maintains metadata standards, file naming conventions, folder structures, archival procedures, backup systems, and organizational workflows supporting long-term preservation and accessibility of institutional multimedia assets.
  • Coordinates media transfers, cloud storage, production archives, file delivery, and retrieval of multimedia assets supporting university communications.
  • Assists in organizing historical multimedia collections and preparing existing photography and video assets for future marketing, recruitment, advancement, and institutional storytelling initiatives.
  • Maintains organized digital libraries supporting efficient retrieval and reuse of university multimedia assets across departments.
  • Assists in developing efficient multimedia workflows that improve production quality, asset organization, and long-term usability of institutional content.

Video Capture & Multimedia Production

  • Captures professional video content supporting university marketing, communications, advancement, recruitment, executive communications, fundraising, and institutional storytelling initiatives.
  • Produces interviews, student testimonials, faculty profiles, alumni stories, documentaries, promotional videos, recruitment videos, executive messaging, social media content, and branded multimedia campaigns.
  • Operates professional cinema, mirrorless, DSLR, mobile, drone, and supporting camera systems utilizing appropriate lighting, composition, stabilization, and professional audio recording techniques.
  • Captures high-quality B-roll, interviews, environmental footage, and supporting visuals for university websites, digital marketing campaigns, social media, presentations, advertising, publications, and institutional communications.
  • Assists with multimedia coverage of university ceremonies, executive events, special events, strategic initiatives, and the university's Five Signature Events, ensuring consistent visual storytelling across the institution.
  • Works collaboratively with University Communications staff and campus partners to identify opportunities for compelling visual storytelling that advances university priorities.
  • Produces video content that reflects the university's Brand Promise, Brand Pillars, Brand Personality, and established visual identity standards.
  • Maintains current knowledge of video production techniques, camera technologies, production equipment, and industry best practices to continuously improve university multimedia content.

Post-Production, Multimedia Editing & Asset Management

  • Coordinates production logistics supporting multimedia assignments from planning through final delivery.
  • Assists with scheduling productions, coordinating faculty, staff, students, alumni, community partners, vendors, and contractors participating in multimedia projects.
  • Coordinates production logistics including equipment preparation, location scheduling, production calendars, transportation, permits, production documentation, model releases, and shoot logistics.
  • Maintains departmental multimedia equipment including cameras, lenses, lighting systems, audio equipment, drones, tripods, stabilizers, storage devices, batteries, memory cards, and related accessories.
  • Catalogs, inventories, organizes, checks out, tracks, and maintains multimedia equipment and production supplies to ensure operational readiness.
  • Coordinates equipment maintenance, repairs, firmware updates, warranty documentation, software licensing, replacement recommendations, and lifecycle tracking.
  • Maintains organized production workspaces, storage systems, production kits, and equipment documentation.
  • Utilizes University Communications workflow systems including PhotoShelter, Wrike, Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Canva, and other departmental production and project management software.
  • Maintains production calendars, project documentation, production checklists, equipment records, and operational workflows supporting University Communications.
  • Coordinates file requests, multimedia deliveries, production scheduling, and communication with campus departments and external vendors.
  • Assists with maintaining department production standards and workflow documentation supporting efficient multimedia operations

Photography & Visual Storytelling

  • Captures professional photography supporting university marketing, communications, advancement, recruitment, executive communications, academic programs, campus events, institutional storytelling, and special initiatives.
  • Produces environmental portraits, classroom imagery, laboratory photography, campus life photography, research documentation, editorial photography, event coverage, and marketing imagery.
  • Creates photography supporting university websites, print publications, digital advertising, social media, presentations, print collateral, digital signage, and other university communication channels.
  • Produces imagery consistent with the university's established Brand Photo Styles, including Campus Life, Academic, and Profile photography.
  • Performs image editing, color correction, cropping, retouching, optimization, and preparation for publication.
  • Maintains a consistent photographic style aligned with university branding and visual identity standards.

Other Functions:

  • Supports University Communications staff with multimedia production activities associated with major university initiatives, special projects, emergency communications, executive communications, and other institutional priorities.
  • Researches emerging multimedia technologies, production techniques, software applications, equipment, and workflow improvements that enhance departmental efficiency and content quality. Represents University Communications professionally while interacting with faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, community partners, vendors, and members of the public.
  • Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • General knowledge of marketing, branding, and/or communications, and/or public relations.
  • General knowledge of applicable copyright and other laws pertaining to written materials, news media and confidentiality.
  • Ability to appropriately handle sensitive and confidential information.
  • General knowledge and understanding of media outlets including print, television, and radio. Ability to work with the media for the coverage of events.
  • Skill in following guidelines and providing input and feedback.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively in a diverse environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Relevant education and/or experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

SPECIALIZED SKILLS:

Demonstrated proficiency operating professional photography and video production equipment in support of marketing, communications, and institutional storytelling.

Technical fluency with Adobe Creative Cloud applications including:

  • Adobe Premiere Pro
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Adobe Lightroom
  • Adobe Media Encoder

Working knowledge of:

  • Adobe After Effects (preferred)

Demonstrated ability to organize, archive, keyword, and maintain large multimedia collections utilizing established metadata standards; manage multimedia production workflows from content capture through editing, delivery, and long-term digital asset management; produce photography and videography consistent with the university's Brand Promise, Brand Pillars, Brand Personality, and Brand Photo Styles; maintain organized multimedia equipment, production workspaces, storage systems, and production documentation; and prioritize multiple multimedia projects while maintaining quality, consistency, and established production timelines.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Working in higher education, marketing, communications, journalism, public relations, or a related creative environment; planning, capturing, editing, and delivering professional photography and multimedia content supporting institutional marketing and storytelling initiatives; managing large multimedia collections utilizing Digital Asset Management (DAM) systems; utilizing platforms such as PhotoShelter, Wrike, TerminalFour (T4), Canva, or similar enterprise content management systems; coordinating multimedia productions involving multiple stakeholders; collaborating within communications, marketing, or creative services teams; and demonstrating knowledge of university branding, accessibility requirements, integrated marketing communications, and California State University, Monterey Bay's Vision, Mission, and institutional values.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. The position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time.  May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
